Trivia…which quarterback had the most game winning drives, was sixth in total passing yards AND passes completed/ game, 10th in completion percentage, and still held an ADP of QB18 and 133rd overall?  …  Oh, did I mention he played the last three games with a dislocated thumb?

Give up?

Well if you did not guess from the title, it is Matthew Stafford.

2017 Fantasy Football Matthew Stafford Profile

When we think “Lion’s Football” the first thing that comes to mind is that 6’5” stud muffin they call “Megatron”. However, after Calvin Johnson called it quits before the 2016 season, the Lions still finished 9-7 and clinched the wild card from the mighty NFC North.

How?

Well, let’s focus on the team’s best player, Matthew Stafford.

At 29 years old, the Georgia product saw his passing yards increase, while his interceptions decreased from the previous two years.

Stafford’s QB rating was a touch lower on paper than the previous years,13th at 93.3. However, his receivers had a league leading 47 dropped passes, which did not help his cause.

To add to it all, in 2016 Stafford led the league in quickest ball release against the blitz at 2.12 seconds, accounting for a decrease in total sacks allowed in 2016.

Hmm…

2017 Detroit Lions Draft

How about the draft?

Offensively, the Lions selected Wide Receiver Kenny Golladay from Northern Illinois with their third-round pick. They also selected Tight End Michael Roberts from Toledo with their fourth-round pick. Both should help add depth to an already deep receiving corps.

With Golden Tate as the WR1, a toss up between Marvin Jones and Anquan Boldin for WR2 to start the year, Eric Ebron still locked in at starting Tight End and young talent between the sticks, the Lions figure to spread the ball around more.

In 2016 the Lions were third in passing play percentage, throwing 64.6% of the time. This should  continue with the plethora of options

Staffing for Stafford

Bob Quinn, the Lion’s GM, knows how important it is to protect the quarterback.  The Lions began filling in their gaps by making Ricky Wagner became the most overpaid right tackle ever; however, he filled the void at a very crucial position.

They made another huge splash by signing TJ Lang from their biggest division rival, (the Green Bay Cheese-heads) which solidified this very solid offensive line for the start of 2017.

Run Game

One key to a quarterback’s success is the run-game.

With a running back core of hyped Ameer Abdullah, Theo Reddick, Zach Zenner and Matt Asiata, the Lions have plenty of depth at the position.

Free agent Darren Fells, a blocking tight end, was signed to help to bolster the blocking scheme for Stafford and the run game in 2017.

This is going to help ease pressure off Matthew Stafford, as well as keep his turnover level down as it was in 2016.

Division

How about the division?

Yes, the Packers passing “D” in 2016 was awful.  They allowed 4,603 total pass yards, about 287.7 yards per game and32 passing touchdowns.

The Vikings and Bears fared a bit better, but still allowed 22 passing touchdowns each in 2016.

Safe to say the division is nothing to be worried about when drafting Stafford in 2017.

Conclusion

Stafford has been in the league since being drafted No.1 overall in 2009, and a true starter since 2011.

Now healthy, Stafford is underrated and holds great value at his current ADP of 108 according to FantasyPros.

With another year to settle into Jim Bob Cooter’s offense, Matthew Stafford should only improve on his 17.5 fantasy points per game. Also coming off a year where he had the most comeback scores in Lions history, eight, they will want to keep the ball in the hands of their best player as much as possible.

You can wait on him in drafts, load up on other positions and get a quarterback who has the potential to be a QB1 at the end of 2017.
