Welcome back to the Fantasy Baseball Top 250 ROS Rankings!

We are almost halfway through the season now, and we are starting to get some explanations for a lot of the surprises and busts so far this year.

Stock Rising

Evan Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays

Longoria’s 17 HR this season are just 4 shy of his full season total from 2015. His HR/FB and hard hit percentages are back where they were in his best season of 2013.

He’s become more of a pull hitter than ever before and is hitting more fly balls as well, which points to the sustainability of his newly rediscovered power.

Jake Lamb, 3B, Arizona Diamondbacks

Lamb’s got at least five HR and 15 RBI in both May and June, and June is only two-thirds over!

He has ascended to the cleanup spot against right-handed pitching, and I think he will stay there.

Own him for power in any league, but get a .290ish AVG and the vast majority of that power the rest of the way if you can use him only against righties in leagues with daily transactions.

DJ LeMahieu, 2B, Colorado Rockies

I doubted him in the preseason because of his high BABIP last season, and while it has come down, he is walking more, striking out less and hitting the ball harder to make up for the lost luck.

I also like it when I hear of mechanical changes to back up the success. He’s also been moved to the number two spot in the Rockies’ lineup in front of Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez and will be a better source of runs going forward.

Carlos Estevez, RP, Colorado Rockies

Colorado also has a new closer, as Jake McGee hit the DL June 11th. In those ten days, Estevez has already racked up four saves.

Obviously, the pace will not continue, but I think he will nail down a few more before McGee or Adam Ottavino get back from the DL and can hold on to this job.

Stock Falling

James Shields, SP, Chicago White Sox

More like: “stock crashed harder than the one in the Wolf of Wall Street”. Do you remember that time Shields’ ERA was 3.06? Oh? That was less than a month ago? And now his ERA is what? 6.28? Yikes!

He hasn’t given up fewer than 6 earned runs in any of his four outings since then, and his ERA estimators don’t predict much respite for him either.

I don’t know how I could trust him in any size league for the rest of the season.

Gerrit Cole, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates

If you look at his peripherals, or simply his career worst 1.32 WHIP, Cole wasn’t pitching like the ace we saw last year. Then he hit the DL with a biceps injury and the Pirates don’t know how long he’ll be out.

Color me skeptical he returns in just the 15 days or pitches like the ace he was picked to be the rest of this season.

Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates

I hate to write this about one of my favorite players in the game, but McCutchen sports career-worst worst strikeout, walk, contact and hard-hit rates. Just let that sink in.

The “good news” is that is that he has been nursing a hurt thumb, caused by gripping his bat tighter than he has in the past.

So it seems logical to me that he would adjust his grip, the thumb will heal, and he’ll be a top-50 hitter the rest of the season. Still, that’s not what any of us were hoping for.
