2019 Fantasy Football Week 14 Trends

What. A. Day.

Coming into this weekend’s slate of NFL games, we knew some high-quality games were coming our way, and they did not disappoint.

We saw one of the most incredible games in recent memory as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the New Orleans Saints, 48-46. 2019 Fantasy Football Week 14 Trends

Records were broken as Devlin “Duck” Hodges became the first UDFA quarterback to win his first three starts in the form of a 23-17 Steelers victory over the Cardinals.

We also saw a glimpse of the future in Denver as Drew Lock improved to 2-0 as a starter with a 38-24 upset of the Houston Texans.

Now, let’s get into what happened in the Fantasy Football world.

2019 Fantasy Football Week 14 Trends

1. Jimmy Garoppolo and Drew Brees…Wow!

It would be disrespectful to Jimmy G and Drew Brees if I started this article talking about anyone except them. They had world-class performances today, passing for 349 yards each. They threw four and five touchdowns, respectively.

Let’s start with the winner, Jimmy Garoppolo. What a game he had on Sunday. Clearly, Jimmy G’s playcalling and talent around him is well above-average. But let’s give the man the respect he deserves! This is now multiple times in recent weeks where Garoppolo has essentially carried his team to victory. After a rather slow start to the year, he looks like the franchise QB the 49ers believe he is.

But, the man with the better performance was Drew Brees. Brees was his typical hall-of-fame-level self today, throwing zero interceptions. He is nothing short of spectacular, and it’s a shame he had to lose. He didn’t deserve it.

The worst part of this game, for fantasy owners? You probably benched these guys. For good reason, too! The Saints and 49ers both have talented defenses, and it made total sense to leave either of these players on the bench. That’s why we play the games.

2. Tannehill Continues His Reign of Terror

Before I get too into anything, I should probably explain what’s going on in the above tweet. The above tweet shows how quarterbacks stack up from an analytical/advanced perspective. The two stats at play here are CPOE (completion percentage over expected) and EPA (expected points added) per play. If you’re interested in learning more, the author of this tweet, Ben Baldwin, has some helpful links pinned on his Twitter page.

The important thing here for fantasy players is that right now, Ryan Tannehill is playing like the best quarterback in the league. It makes sense, too! The Titans have gone from a stagnant, boring team with Marcus Mariota to one of the NFL’s most exciting offenses with Ryan Tannehill. They embarrassed the Oakland Raiders today, winning 42-21. Tannehill was elite again, throwing for 391 yards and three touchdowns.

The Titans are rolling and now enter into a critical divisional matchup with the Houston Texans. Every game matters from here on out as the Pittsburgh Steelers hold the tiebreaker for the wild card, and Houston holds the tiebreaker for the division. Trust Tannehill next week in what should be a shootout.

3. Todd Gurley Gets Going

There were a plethora of reports about how Gurley would be used this season, predicting just about everything. Once the season started and he received little carries, the Gurley haters took a victory lap. Now, the Gurley truthers deserve a victory lap of their own.

As the season moves on, it is clear that the LARams are slowly using Gurley more and more often. As a reference point, Gurley received 66% of the carries on Sunday Night Football. He received only 44% of the carries Week 1.

The Rams need to string together some W’s in order to make the playoffs, and it seems like they’re going to rely on their expensive running back. Gurley was fine tonight, rushing for 78 yards and a touchdown. He still wasn’t great, but the coaching staff will head home happy after a 28-12 victory.

Next week, TGII gets a Dallas defense that’s getting worse by the week. He should be able to take advantage of this positive matchup.

4. DeAndre Washington Comes Alive

Probably the number one name atop most teams’ waiver list is Oakland Raiders running back DeAndre Washington. Josh Jacobs missed Week 14 with a shoulder injury and will now receive an MRI. With Oakland two games back of a playoff spot, their season is all but over. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Raiders shut down their star RB.

Washington was strong in Jacobs’s absence, totaling 96 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he saw 58% of the team’s carries. That’s double the share of any other player. Sometimes, a player’s attempts makes him more trustworthy than the ending yardage total. It shows that the coaching staff has confidence in him.

Next week, Washington will face a Jacksonville Jaguars defense just completely destroyed by the Chargers‘ offense – allowing 45 points. In PPR leagues, Washington is startable.

5. Sony Michel Fails Again

Strangely, one of the quieter stories of the 2019 NFL season has been the collapse of Sony Michel. Once considered an every week starter, Michel got just eight rushing yards on five carries today. Against the Chiefs, too. Not exactly the 1985 Bears.

This brings Michel to a measly 653 yards this year and six touchdowns. It’s a big letdown from last season, when he posted almost 1,000 yards rushing and twelve touchdowns.

The Patriots as a whole look extremely dysfunctional on offense, now on a two-game losing streak. They need to get things figured out before the playoffs, and history says they will. But, all that matters in fantasy football is the regular season. And right now, Sony Michel is absolutely not a startable option, especially for a playoff team.
