2019 Valspar Championship DFS Golf FanDuel Picks

on

While this week’s Valspar Championship does not have the prestige of last week’s event at TPC Sawgrass it does present the field with a very difficult test. The event is played at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Copperhead presents the field with very tight fairways that place a premium on accuracy off the tee. Some events on tour produce a score of 20 under par. That certainly won’t be the case here. To illustrate that point, the 2018 Valspar Champion posted a winning score of just 10 under par. Additionally, if the wind speeds get in the high range during this week’s tournament it will likely result in an even higher score for the eventual winner.

The current weather forecast for this week’s event indicates that wind gusts on Thursday afternoon could be in the 15-20 miles an hour range. If that forecast holds then it would appear that morning starters would have an advantage with a lack of wind and damper conditions. For those that play showdown tournaments on DK, keep that in mind for the first round. The forecast for the rest of the tournament indicates wind speeds in the 10-15 miles an hour range in the afternoon. No rain is currently in the forecast.

As a Florida resident myself, I would recommend paying close attention to the forecast on Wednesday evening as the forecast can change rather quickly here in the sunshine state.

Previous winners of this event performed very highly compared to the field in strokes gained approach and driving accuracy. As I mentioned earlier, this course has very tight fairways. If you don’t strike the ball well you are penalized much more than some courses on tour.

My focus this week will be on players that perform well in those statistical areas.

Dustin Johnson $12,900

DJ is coming off a top 5 finish at The Players Championship. In last week’s event, Dustin was first in the field in strokes gained approach. Last week’s field was the strongest of the year. The Valspar presents a much weaker field. He has 2 wins in 2019 and he is the number one player in the world for a reason.

Sergio Garcia $11,300

He has 5 top 25 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2019. Sergio has played the Valspar 6 times in his career and has never missed the cut. Additionally, he finished 4th at this event in 2018.

Patrick Reed $10,800

Reed never seems to pop when it comes to statistical categories. However, the 2018 Masters champion always seems to find a way to perform well. Reed has made 12 consecutive cuts on tour. He has a very good course history here as well.

Webb Simpson $10,700

The 2018 Players Champion has not missed a cut this year. Webb finished 8th at the Valspar in 2018. Webb is 23rd for driving accuracy and 17th for strokes gained approach on tour in 2019.

Jason Kokrak $9,700

Kokrak has played very consistently all year long. It seems that he is on the verge of making a run at a victory on tour this year. He has not missed a cut in 2019. He is currently 4th on tour in strokes gained approach.

Kevin Kisner $9,600

Kisner’s last five results on tour are 26, 28, 27, 23, 22. Kisner does not have a great course history here, but I am not concerned. Kisner has not played this event since 2015. Quite simply he is a much better golfer now than he was in 2015. Kisner loves courses like Copperhead with tight fairways that require accuracy off the tee. I expect him to play well.

If you are looking for lower-priced players to fill out your lineups I like the following players:

  • J.T. Poston $8,300
  • Nick Taylor $8,000
  • Roger Sloan $8,000
  • Cameron Triangle $7,600
  • Julian Etulain $7,500

As always, good luck!
