2020 Fantasy Baseball Positional Eligibility Guide

One of my favorite differences between fantasy baseball and other sports is the ability to qualify at multiple positions. The added strategy for drafts really allows me to geek out even more than normal.

However, there’s also the downside of assuming a player qualifies at a position only to find out that they didn’t according to the site you use for your league. If you are like me, you just imagine players appear at certain positions and don’t think twice about double-checking.

Well, imagine no more! We’ve got the all-inclusive chart right here. Props to Baseball-Reference for having an awesome chart that helped immensely with this exercise.

PlatformPrevious Season (Appearances)Current Season (Appearances)Additional Notes
NFBC2010If minor leaguer with less than 20 career MLB games, then use appearances from minor leagues.
Yahoo!10 (5 starts)10 (5 starts)
Ottoneu10 (5 starts)10 (5 starts)

Here’s a chart describing positional standards by each platform. Mostly an FYI, but it will serve as a complimentary table to the large table seen below.

2020 Fantasy Baseball Position Eligibility Guide

Before we begin though, I want to be sure everyone understands what the chart is depicting. If the player has an ‘X’ under a column, he has eligibility at that position on all platforms with 20 or more appearances. If there is a number from 5 to 19, then that player will be eligible in your Yahoo.

I’ve kept DH in here just in case we have some interesting league types floating around out there. Use the filter and sorting tools to your advantage!

Notable/Potential In-Season Qualifiers

First Base

  • With Josh Donaldson signing in Minnesota, Miguel Sano is expected to shift to first base full-time. The defensive alignment for the Twins makes a big jump in value with these moves. With first base being pretty top-heavy, Sano could be a sneaky pick at his current ADP with the flexibility to move to a 1B slot.
  • The primary goal of the Rangers this spring seems to be finding at-bats for rookie Nick Solak. They plan to try him out both at first base and center field while playing Danny Santana around the infield to spell guys like Todd Frazier, Rougned Odor, and Ronald Guzman. If Solak gets consistent playing time, he’ll be an excellent target in the later rounds of redraft leagues.

Second Base

  • The Phillies are running experiments this spring to see where they will place Jean Segura and Scott Kingery. Right now, it appears that they really want to move Segura to third so that Kingery can be at his natural position of second base. Regardless, I would expect each to get eligibility at third and second as the season progresses.

Third Base

  • With the departure of Anthony Rendon, the Nationals are looking for a replacement at third. While they re-signed Asdrubal CabreraCarter Kieboom is expected to compete for the job in Spring Training. They prepped him for the move at the end of 2019 in Triple-A.
  • At the moment, Eric Sogard is the best option that the Brewers have at third base. He should gain eligibility there within the first couple of weeks.

  • The Dodgers like to mix and match lineups to give guys rest with how deep their team is. With this in mind, expect Gavin Lux to fill in at shortstop frequently to spell Corey Seager.
