2020 Fantasy Baseball Week 3 Pitching Planner (Aug 10 – Aug 16)

The shortened 60 game MLB season has been nothing short of “entertaining.” You never know what news is going to break with each passing moment! But the past is the past and it is time to look ahead with the 2020 Fantasy Baseball Week 3 Pitching Planner.

The Atlanta Braves lost a young budding Ace in Mike Soroka for the season to an Achilles tear. The Braves rotation currently looks like Max Fried, Sean Newcomb, Touki Toussaint and Kyle Wright while a fifth starter is to be determined.

The St. Louis Cardinals have not played a baseball game since July 29th. They were scheduled to play the Chicago Cubs this past weekend, but that series has been postponed due to another positive COVID-19 test.

Jack Flaherty was a top 20 pick in Fantasy Baseball drafts and has made just one start this season. At least with an injured pitcher, you have some sort of timetable for return. In the Cardinals’/Flaherty’s case, it seems endless!

Jon Lester, Alec Mills and Kyle Hendricks were scheduled to pitch for the Cubbies this weekend. Chicago is scheduled to play six games next week and now Lester has turned into a Week 3 two-start pitcher.

I will do my best to share all the important news I come across, along with any trends we are starting to see.

The Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays are scheduled to play just five games.

The Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals are scheduled to play every day in Week 3.

Every other team is scheduled to play six games.

Pitcher of the Week

Dylan Bundy, Los Angeles Angels

Bundy tossed a complete-game four-hitter against the Seattle Mariners on August 6th. He struck out 10 batters and walked none.

Dylans has looked great in an Angels uniform. Over three quality starts, Bundy has completed 21.2 innings pitched with 25 strikeouts and just two base on balls. He owns a 2.08 ERA with a 0.60 WHIP.

Bundy wasn’t even a top 200 pick according to NFBC ADP from 12-team drafts in July.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Frankie Montas – 2 QS / 14 IP / 14 K / 0.64 ERA / 0.71 WHIP
  • Lucas Giolito – 2 QS / 13 IP / 18 K / 2.77 ERA / 1.23 WHIP

Every week I will pull team data from FanGraphs to see which offenses are having the hardest time making good contact and scoring runs. I will then match those teams up with all probable starting pitchers that are less than 60% owned in Yahoo Fantasy Baseball leagues.

Injury Updates

After losing three of his first four starts as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Madison Bumgarner has landed on the 10-day IL with a back injury. Over 17.1 innings, Bumgarner owns a 9.35 ERA and gave up four home runs in his last start. He’s in the first year of a five-year, $85 million contract.

“That’s 56 pitchers on the IL for non-COVID reasons through the first 18 days of this season.” – @Alden_Gonzalez

Charlie Morton (shoulder) has been placed on the 10-day injured list.

Max Scherzer left his start early on Wednesday because of a hamstring injury. He is expected to make his next start but this is something to keep an eye on!

The Tampa Bay Rays placed Yonny Chirinos on the injured list with right triceps inflammation.

Kendall Graveman will miss at least one start in the Seattle Mariners rotation with a neck injury.

Carlos Rodon left his start early on August 3rd but so far preliminary scans of his left shoulder came back negative.

In Other News

Looks like Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac were hanging out together, violating Cleveland’s team protocols. Adam Plutko will start for the Indians on Tuesday instead.

Prospect Portal

Oakland Athletics Jesus Luzardo struck out five Texas Rangers in five scoreless innings in his first MLB start.

Spencer Howard made his MLB debut for the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, against the Atlanta Braves. It did not go well. Howard allowed 7 hits and four earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. He did strikeout four Braves hitters.

Justin Dunn and Justus Sheffield have each made two starts for the Seattle Mariners. In a combined 14.2 innings pitched, they have struck out 13 batters while also walking 13, allowed 12 hits and own a combined ERA of 8.24.

That was before Sheffield took the mound on Sunday and struck out seven over six scoreless innings!

This Call to the Pen…

Kwang Hyun Kim has been moved into the St. Louis Cardinals rotation (if they ever play again). Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos could share the role.

Roberto Osuna is likely headed for Tommy John surgery. Ryan Pressly blew a save on Thursday night but it is still his job to lose.

Craig Kimbrel has been brutal for the Chicago Cubs and does not have one of the club’s four saves. Ryan Wick has two, Jeremy Jeffress has one and Kyle Ryan has the other.

Nick Burdi‘s season is over (elbow). Burdi was holding down the fort for the Pittsburgh Pirates, without Kyle Crick, until Keone Kela returned from injury, It looks like Richard Rodriguez is the next man up in the Bucs pen.
