2020 Fantasy Football Week 14 Defense Stream-O-Matic

This installment of the 2020 Fantasy Football Week 14 Defense Stream-O-Matic is the tenth during this NFL season.

As always, let's check out the results last week relative to the Stream-O-Matic rankings. See the chart below.

Among my waiver wire suggestions last week:

  • I liked the Packers and Chiefs as streaming options last week. While the Chiefs weren't great, the Packers had a top-five week with seven sacks and a turnover. Green Bay's DST has been a nice plug-and-play option for the last couple of weeks, but I'm looking to other options for the fantasy playoffs.
  • Seattle lost to the Giants at home as a double-digit favorite in Week 13. However, their defense had a decent performance for fantasy, finishing in the top ten.
  • I advised sitting the Bears and Bills defenses last week, who finished below average. Yay, hopefully, you pick someone else!
  • The last suggestion was to utilize the Vikings and Falcons as cheap options in DFS or streaming options in deep leagues. The Atlanta pick was not a great one and was more of a shot in the dark. But hey, the Vikings had a very nice week, finishing in the top five at the position in fantasy scoring.

I use a traditional rotisserie scoring style commonly used in fantasy baseball season-long leagues to give point totals to each team.

The categories for the chart are listed below along with links to websites that I use to find this data.

  • Own%: Ownership percentages based on 12-team ESPN leagues gives us an idea of who is available. This doesn’t factor into the standings.
  • Location: Generally speaking, defenses play better at home than on the road. Thus, a five-point advantage is given to all home teams.
  • Wind: The only weather element that has shown a direct correlation with point totals is winds in excess of 15 MPH. Another five-point bonus is awarded to teams playing in such windy conditions.
  • Vegas: Using Vegas odds, the spread and over/under generates a projected game score that the bettors go against. This game score portrays what the game flow could look like and, therefore, which fantasy football defenses are in a good position to succeed.
  • oSAC%: To gauge how good (or bad) an opposing offensive line might be, look at the sack percentage for that team’s offense. Not only are some offensive lines bad, but some quarterbacks don’t show the ability to avoid the sack.
  • oINT%: The opponent’s interception percentage obviously helps in streaming a defense. Turnover percentage is not used here because fumbles can be a little fluky and turnover percentage uses both fumbles and interceptions.
  • FPPG: I use ESPN defensive scoring rankings to determine a ranking of the fantasy football defenses.
  • DVOA: Probably the most popular tool for evaluating defenses, the DVOA efficiency ratings are utilized to give a strong baseline to the rankings.

Top Streaming Options

It's a pretty chalky week with highly-owned defenses attracting great matchups. So, forgive me if this week's options are a little less, umm, sexy than previous weeks.

We've got a very interesting matchup between the Washington Football Team and the San Francisco 49ers. San Fran is a 3-point home favorite in a low point-total affair (43.5). Since teams typically get a spread-bump for playing at home, it's fair to say that these two teams are evenly matched. With both teams owned in less than half of leagues, I can see the case for starting either side. I'd prefer the 49ers going up against an offense lacking playmakers outside of Terry McLaurin and giving up the fifth-most sacks in the league. While Washington's defense is in the top tier of real-life defenses, I just don't see the upside for them from a fantasy perspective here.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Arizona Cardinals are a good enough defense to take advantage of a tasty matchup against the Giants. I mean, think about it - the Giants played just about as well as they could last week and the Seahawks DST still had a top-five fantasy finish. That's a Seahawks defense that is below-average in both fantasy scoring and DVOA over the 2020 season. Fire up the Cardinals with no ragrets.

However, I am digging the Carolina Panthers this week against the Broncos. Drew Lock has not exactly been inspiring this season, although one has to admire his fearless attitude toward throwing balls he should never throw. What was that quote he had, "sometimes it leaves my hand and I'm like oh sh*t"... Let's stream against that! The nice thing is that the Panthers are coming off a bye week, which means they should be rested and also very available in your fantasy league.

Discussion - Weeks 15 & 16

2020 fantasy football week 14 defense stream-o-matic

While I'm sitting the Cleveland Browns this week against Baltimore, don't drop them! They are going to be useful against the Giants and Jets in Weeks 15 and 16.

The cool thing about streaming the Cardinals in Week 14 is that you may just strike gold with a Week 15 streaming option. You'll get a week to scout the new-look offense with Jalen Hurts and, if he looks more like Carson Wentz than not-Carson Wentz, then Arizona will be useful as a streamer in Week 15!

The 49ers will be a solid option in Week 15 as well against the Cowboys. That's a nice two-week streamer from the waiver wire.

Many will drop the Buffalo Bills in Week 14 with a matchup against the Steelers on Sunday night. If that's the case, be stealthy and stash them for a Week 15 tilt against the Broncos.

Hopefully, these early rankings will help you set yourself up for playoff success as you inch towards the promised land!
