This installment of the 2020 Fantasy Football Week 7 Defense Stream-O-Matic is the third during this NFL season.

As always, let's check out the results last week relative to the Stream-O-Matic rankings. (Shout out to the homie, Keith Lott!)

Another wild week in the books. As the season progresses, the chart will stabilize and we will start seeing a little more consistency (gah, hopefully). Keep trucking along with me here - better days ahead!

I use a traditional rotisserie scoring style commonly used in fantasy baseball season-long leagues to give point totals to each team.

The categories for the chart are listed below along with links to websites that I use to find this data.

  • Own%: Ownership percentages based on 12-team ESPN leagues gives us an idea of who is available. This doesn’t factor into the standings.
  • Location: Generally speaking, defenses play better at home than on the road. Thus, a five-point advantage is given to all home teams.
  • Wind: The only weather element that has shown a direct correlation with point totals is winds in excess of 15 MPH. Another five-point bonus is awarded to teams playing in such windy conditions.
  • Vegas: Using Vegas odds, the spread and over/under generates a projected game score that the bettors go against. This game score portrays what the game flow could look like and, therefore, which fantasy football defenses are in a good position to succeed.
  • oSAC%: To gauge how good (or bad) an opposing offensive line might be, look at the sack percentage for that team’s offense. Not only are some offensive lines bad, but some quarterbacks don’t show the ability to avoid the sack.
  • oINT%: The opponent’s interception percentage obviously helps in streaming a defense. Turnover percentage is not used here because fumbles can be a little fluky and turnover percentage uses both fumbles and interceptions.
  • FPPG: I use ESPN defensive scoring rankings to determine a ranking of the fantasy football defenses.
  • DVOA: Probably the most popular tool for evaluating defenses, the DVOA efficiency ratings are utilized to give a strong baseline to the rankings.

The Kansas City Chiefs absolutely warrant that extra FAAB buck or waiver claim. Not only do they top the chart this week, but they will likely top the chart next week as well. The Jets' offense awaits them in Week 8. You won't find a better matchup - the Jets are the only team not to reach 100 points yet this season. In fact, they are 25 points behind the next lowest team, Denver, who has played one less game. Regardless, two weeks against the lowest scoring teams means elite fantasy value for the Chiefs DST.

You can go with either team from the Thursday Night Football matchup between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. I envision it going similarly to the ugly game between the Giants and Washington FT just last weekend. If I had to make a decision between the two on the waiver wire, I'd go with the home team in Philly.

I see a lot of similarities between the defenses of the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers this week. Both are home favorites by a touchdown against non-threatening offenses. Both are underperforming in fantasy scoring relative to their DVOA ranking. Forcing Teddy Bridgewater and Gardner Minshew into negative game scripts is good for fantasy defenses, so consider both these squads as viable starting options. I would consider picking up the Chargers over the Saints because of their matchup next week against the Broncos.

Finally, don't let the chart fool you regarding the Washingon Football Team. The opposing sack and interception percentage for the Cowboys is 80% Dak Prescott and 20% Andy Dalton. We all saw how horrible Dalton looked on Monday night and, while I don't think it will be that bad moving forward, I don't think we will see an above-average Dallas offense any time soon. With a huge advantage in the trenches, Washington should have a chance at a ton of sacks and a couple of turnovers. We like that.

Early Week 8 Stream-O-Matic Rankings

I will produce early weekly rankings where I approximate the Vegas odds (proceed with caution). This may help you pick between multiple defenses if one of the defenses also has a good matchup the following week. I'll include as many defenses as I think are necessary, which will fluctuate week by week.

  1. Buccaneers (at NYG) - 132
  2. Chiefs (vs. NYJ) - 117
  3. Steelers (at BAL) - 115
  4. Colts (at DET) - 114
  5. Chargers (at DEN) - 108
  6. Broncos (vs. LAC) - 107
  7. Ravens (vs. PIT) - 103
  8. Rams (at MIA) - 102
  9. Bears (vs. NO) - 91
  10. Dolphins (vs. LAR) - 89
  11. Packers (vs. MIN) - 85
  12. Bills (vs. NE) - 84

Teams with Stream-O-Matic scores in the upper quartile of the league for Week 7 and Week 8 include the Chargers, Chiefs, and Rams.
