2020 Northern Trust DFS Golf Deep Sleepers

2020 Northern Trust DFS Golf

The 2020 Northern Trust returns to Boston as the rotation between the NY and Boston areas continues. Unfortunately this year we won't be overhearing any Red Sox or Yankee chants at the 2020 Northern Trust.

Well, let me rephrase that. The silencing of Yankee fans and Red Sox fans is not a bad thing. But the fact that there will not even be an opportunity for us to hear them or moreover any fans makes me sad. I was thinking about that because I was actually in Times Square this past weekend for the first time since the pandemic broke. It was noisier than the Northern Trust will be, but it was strangely quiet. It really had me wishing for a pre-pandemic time.

I'll stop there before I get too depressing. But do try to appreciate that we at least now have sports like golf to enjoy. We never know when our good fortune might end, so let's root for another great golf tournament.

I will also be rooting for my sleeper picks, who we will set at anyone $7,500 or lower on DraftKings AND $8,500 or lower on FanDuel. That means Adam Hadwin and Harold Varner III are two that I like that unfortunately don't make our tight cut on the FanDuel side.

Like I have the last two weeks I will probably post some additional deep sleepers before the tourney starts. So be sure to follow me on twitter @markstrausberg to see those or just discuss the 2020 Northern Trust!

Dylan Fritelli ($7,000 DK , $8,500 FD)

Fritelli was an incredible value last week on DK and remains so this week. On FanDuel, the value is not as great, but still presents plenty of value. Based upon Fritelli's ranking of 50 in the FedEx standings, he's a lock to play next week as well. That takes a little pressure off, which is a bit of a double-edged sword. But he tied for 20th at the Wyndham last week, which was his third tournament out of the last four with a Top-25 finish. The other non-top 25? It was a 33rd in the loaded PGA Championship field. This Fritelli is no "sloth" and should quickly get you a treasure of fantasy points this weekend.

Denny McCarthy ($6,700 DK, $7,900 FD)

Was that Goonies reference too much of a reach? Perhaps. But reaching down here in the sub-7Ks to grab Denny McCarthy is not. He is coming off another top-10 last week at the Wyndham (that's four total on the year), which vaulted him to 65th in FedEx points. He can likely pack his bags for next week's trip to Olympia Fields as well. Because when you're ranked #1 in Shots Gained Putting on PGA tour like McCarthy is, you are likely going to be doing a lot of traveling. And that includes flying up the standings!

Lanto Griffen ($6,700 DK, $8,100 FD)

FanDuel actually has Griffen priced above McCarthy this week. That might raise an eyebrow or two, but keep your eyes closed and guess where Griffen is in the FedEx Cup Standings. Perhaps around 75th? If I'm asking here, it's probably lower than that, right? 50th sound good? Maybe even 25th? Wrong, wrong, and wrong. He's 12th in FedEx ranking! Now, let's slow our roll a little, much of that is because of what he did before the restart. That includes winning the Houston Open and more than half a dozen other top 25 finishes.

Yet it's not like he has been horrible the last few weeks. He managed to secure a T-44 at the Memorial a few weeks ago and finished T-19 last week at the PGA when he shot three rounds of 68. Expecting him to finish in the top 20 here is ambitious. But this is another golfer whose price point on DK and FedEx ranking are way out of whack. We need to take advantage of that imbalance.

Mark Hubbard ($6,600 DK, $7,900 FD)

We might need to start renaming this article the "Hubbard Weekly". Once again, Hubbard makes an appearance here. He's the same price on FanDuel this week as last, but his salary actually dropped this week on DraftKings. I'll remind you what I said last week that there is no one thing that Hubbard does particularly well. However this jack-of-all-trades continues to look absolutely regal, including last week's T-15th finish.  I hope you don't need any more reasons to have some shares of Hubbard this weekend, but the guy also has a great first name!

Brian Stuard ($6,200 DK, $7,300 FD)

We got a lot of debutantes this week when it comes to Northern Trust DFS Sleepers. But I always like to have at least one cheap play who has a decent record at the course and Stuard fits that bill in spades.  At age 37, Stuard is no spring chicken, but in his four appearances here from 2013 to 2018 he went a perfect four-for-four cuts made including two top-25s. He's obviously comfortable here and we know he can make the cut which is all we pretty much asking for at this price. He's a remarkable 4th in Driving Accuracy and a solid 44th in Scrambling, which should portend him playing the weekend as well.

Matthew NeSmith ($6,100 DK, $7,000 FD)

Like the aforementioned Hubbard, NeSmith was also featured in this space last week. I liked him much more last week when he had the benefit of some home Carolina cooking. He made me look smart though with a respectable 42nd place last week, which provided plenty of profit. Is the same thing likely to happen this week? NeSmith's scrambling scares me this week. So don't count on a top-40 finish, but down here we're just looking to hit the board with our dart throws. And you could do a lot worse than the guy currently 19th in greens in regulation.

Good luck at the 2020 Northern Trust Open with these Deep Sleepers plus your DFS Golf picks!
