2021-22 Fantasy Hockey Week 2 Planner

on

Welcome to the 2021-22 Fantasy Hockey Week 2 Planner!

And just like that, the first week of the 2021-2022 NHL season is in the books. Ovi looks like the Ovi of old, the Kraken got their first win, Brady Tkachuk inked a new long-term contract and the Habs started out their season 0-2.

Fantasy Hockey head-to-head matchups are won in the details. Shrewd, detail-oriented managers will target certain categories in order to get a leg-up on the competition. Each week, I will highlight certain players who I think can bolster specific stat categories. This will be based on games played in a week, power-play opportunity, opposing team strength and streakiness of the player.

Players on the New York Islanders and Nashville Predators should be considered since they will play four games against average to below-average competition. Goals should flow for both these teams this week. Kyle Palmieri is highlighted in this week’s planner for this reason.

On the other hand, the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning each only play two games in week 2.  Worse, their games fall on busy nights. Alex Killorn will find his way in upcoming weekly planners, but not this one.

Top Targets for Week 2

Kyle Palmieri, LW/RW, 4 games

After being moved to the Islanders at last year’s trade deadline, Palmieri has been playing like a man possessed. He had nine points in 19 games (against tough competition in Boston and Tampa) and actually bumped his way to 34 hits.

Palmieri figures to see ample power play time on a talented roster. He meshes well on the Islanders’ second line and will see plenty of scoring opportunities, considering he will face the Hawks, Jackets and Coyotes (Vegas being the other matchup).

Bold weekly prediction: 1 goal, 3 assists, +3, 1 PPP, 6 hits, 8 shots

Josh Anderson, RW, 3 games

If you’re looking for hits and goals, Mr. Anderson (my name is Neo) is your man. Anderson tends to get hot at the start of the year like he did for the Habs last year. He played like a man on fire in the NHL Playoffs last year and has carried that into the early part of this season. Look for him to pop a few goals in this week.

As an added bonus, since all three Habs games are at home, Anderson will get the crowd going with 3-4 hits per game.

Bold weekly prediction: 2 goals, 1 assist, +2, 0 PPP, 10 hits, 10 shots

Mario Ferraro, D, 4 games

The Sharks play four times this week and Ferraro is out for a bloody revenge tour. This is a mean man who is a human missile. Expect 10 hits minimum from him this week, at least. If you have a roster with only three defensemen, this could be a nice addition to lock up an often-overlooked category.

Bold Prediction: 1 assist, -2, 4 shots, 15 hits

Chandler Stephenson, C, LW, Off-Night Superstar

While I don’t love this guy’s talent as a top-line center, fortunately, he centers Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty. His speed seems to have improved over the offseason, so it’s possible his production will see an uptick. Obviously, playing on Vegas means rarely being a negative plus/minus.

He plays on 3 off nights this week (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday)! This is a sneaky pickup that could easily win you the week. Pick him up and play him when your opponent is having a quiet night.

Bold Prediction: 4 assists, +3

Goalies

I usually like a ‘wait and see’ approach to goaltending, hoping that my goalies don’t get blown up on Monday or Tuesday. As such, I will favor goalies who have favorable later-in-the-week matchups who can bring you back from the proverbial dead, or, alternatively, may be shots in the dark but could work out.

Chris Driedger – Seattle Kraken – G

Tuesday vs New Jersey Devils

If you’re desperate for a spot start early in the week, then this is the pickup/start for you. The Kraken actually held their own against the formidable Vegas Knights in their first-ever game, only falling to them 4-3. The Devils do not possess much offensive firepower, and I expect this game to be low-scoring, so Driedger could be quite a sneaky pickup.

Kaapo Kahkonen – Minnesota Wild – G

Friday vs Nashville Predators

It isn’t a great matchup, but Kahkonen will likely get the nod on Friday night against Smashville’s Preds, backstopping the up-and-coming Minnesota Wild. I expect this game to be tightly checked, so it’s very possible this pickup could bolster your GAA and Save%, and could even possibly net you the coveted Win. The Predators are likely to be a middle-of-the-road team this year, so it’s a decent matchup for Kahkonen here.
