2021-22 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Planner

on

Alright people, here we go, your 2021-22 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Planner!

So far this year we’ve seen some new things (Bertuzzi with a 4 goal game against the Bolts!) and some things old (Kucherov hanging out in the salary-friendly LTIR) but heading into week 3 things are regressing back to the mean. Except maybe Buffalo being 3-0-0 to start the season, that caught most people off guard. Instead of fixating on the flukes, let’s try and stick with some tangibles that are more predictable and beneficial for your pool!

This week we will have seven teams (CAR, CGY, FLA, ARI, LAK, ANA, MTL) that have 4 games. Looking forward there are a couple of players that appeal to me with their schedule like Anthony Duclair (26% rostered on Yahoo) Rickard Rakell (14%) and Christian Dvorak (24%). I’ll dive into Dvorak and my other picks further down.

Adversely, 3 teams have 2 games (OTT, EDM, NSH) and the bad luck losers this week are the Islanders with just 1. So if you snagged, say, Connor Brown (20%) in hopes of a continued heater you are probably safe to drop him for one of the suggestions below.

With all that out of the way, let’s get to it.

2021-22 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Planner: A Spooky Gost!

Top Targets

Shayne Gostisbehere (ARI – D) 16% rostered

Opponents:  @FLA, @TBL, @WSH, @CAR

Before we get to carried away here I will raise a flag of caution. While Arizona does have 4 games this week, look at those teams. Yikes. That’s a tall task. Luckily you aren’t picking him for his SV% or Wins, hopefully we are looking at some apples, and probably some blocks.

Chychrun seems to have been relegated to a shut down role leaving Ghostbear with a cushier gig. Ghost has almost double PPTOI (4:07 vs 2:08 average this year) and Chychrun has taken all the SHTOI, so all the heavy lifting. While Chychrun has  had a bit more EVTOI so far, the ‘yotes are going to struggle to score without some sort of handicap, so advantage Ghost.

Another word of caution, don’t expect a whole lot more from Ghost outside of a handful of shots and some assists. Coyotes will be on their heels though, so hopefully, we see an uptick in blocks and shots. If nothing else, pick him up just because of those solid Kachina jerseys.

Christian Dvorak (MTL – C,LW) 24% rostered

Opponents: @SEA, @SJS, @LAK, @ANA

I danced around highlighting either Dvorak or Duclair, after another Habs defeat (Sharks dominating 5-0) I decided on Dvorak. Montreal are due for some positive regression. Elliot Friedman believes Montreal has “lost their identity” this year, I tend to agree. But next week Dvorak can hopefully start rebuilding it.

Habs have a week long road trip starting with the latest and rainiest team, the Seattle Kraken. That’s followed up with a trip down the California coast. There are winnable games here, and Dvorak is front and center (Second line C, top powerplay) of the action, plus he can bring great peripherals.

Montreal tends to roll lines fairly evenly, which makes his line more of a 1B then straight line 2. His wingers line up like so; Jonathan Drouin in the midst of his redemption tour and Josh Anderson (who has a habit of being a honey badger) who can dominate games with a bit of tenacity. I can see Dvorak with a big week.

Viktor Arvidsson (LAK – LW,RW) 55% rostered

Opponents: @STL, WPG, MTL, BUF

This one might be a stretch at 55% ownership on Yahoo already, but guess what, that means 45% of you have a chance! Instead of inserting that often used dumb and dumber gif, let’s just cut right to the chase. Arvi’s enter, Anze Kopitar, is hot. Too hot! Literally way too hot (38.5 SH%), and Arvi hasn’t seen enough of his fair share. I’d expect to see a couple of goals if he keeps shooting like he has been (SOG last 3 games: 2-5-5).

His competition this week has had a shaky start and the Kings have a nice looking schedule, so here’s hoping he gets a chance to tickle the twine. His PPTOI has been the same as Kopi, he’s on the top line with Kopi, so hopefully, Kopi is willing to share the fire. You’re sure to get some shots, some assists, probably a couple of goals.

Timo Meier (SJS – LW,RW) 42% rostered

Opponents: @NSH, MTL, WPG

This one is just a bonus pick-up! I’m not getting into depths but if you check out his stat sheet, he’s picking up the Kane slack, shooting and hitting! With Kane suspended for 21 games plus an unknown future, this is Timo Time! I’m sure ownership is going to explode after recent outings. Go get him! Or trade for him with someone who’s still unconvinced!

Honorable Mentions:

Anthony Duclair (FLA – LW,RW) – ARI, BOS, @DET, @BOS

Jesperi Kotkaniemi (CAR – C,LW) – TOR, BOS, CHI, ARI

Cam Fowler/Kevin Shattenkirk (ANA – D) – WPG, BUF, @VGK, MTL

Goalies

There isn’t a Fantasy Hockey writer in the world who likes predicting goalies, because you can’t. Easily the most volatile position in fantasy hockey, if not fantasy sports in general. I’m going to throw a couple of guys out there and maybe something will stick.

Jake Allen *shudder* will be shouldering a workload this week with Carey Price out and Sam Montembeault looking worse than Allen. If GA’s aren’t a big concern he should get stops and starts.

I trust Braden Holtby about as far as I can throw him. But Dallas seems to like him, and he’s been holding his own. Stars have an ok schedule (@CBJ, VGK, OTT) and if he gets the starts he could be worth stashing in the meantime.

One last stretch here (big stretch) is the situation with the Bolts. Vasi has had an ok start. Certainly not the start expected from the repeat champ. But if Cooper decides to start the week off with Brian Elliott against Buffalo in the first game of a back-to-back, that’s as sweet a gig as you can get. Then all going well maybe he starts again against Arizona. Then you can probably ship him off.
