2021 Dynasty Baseball Prospect Profile: Ford Proctor

In this week's edition of the 2021 Dynasty Baseball Prospect Profile, I break down Tampa Bay Rays Ford Proctor. He was drafted in the third round by the Rays in 2018 out of Rice University.

As we all know, the Rays have a stacked farm system with players such as Wander Franco, Vidal Brujan, Josh Lowe, Joe Ryan, Shane Baz, and many others.

Who is the next Joey Wendle or Jake Cronenworth-type to come from the Rays farm system?

One of the things that makes Ford Proctor so interesting is his baseball intelligence mixed with his positional flexibility. At 24 years old with a height of 6'1 and a weight of 195 pounds, Ford is a smart baseball player with room to still improve.

The Rays have been experimenting with his positional flexibility, making Ford a super-utility type of player: he can play every position--even catcher.

Hit Tool

Ford Proctor has a selective approach at the plate. He is an advanced hitter mentally who waits for his pitch in order to get drive behind it. Every season in the minors, Ford's walk rate has improved. This season in AA, his walk rate is at an insanely high 19.3%. He has 33 walks to his 39 strikeouts this year.

Unfortunately, Ford has been unlucky this season with a BABIP of .264. His OBP is still high, which is a good sign for the long term. His OBP this season is .380. If Ford can continue developing his hit tool, this guy will be a valuable super-utility piece for the Rays in future seasons.

Power

Ford Proctor has a skinny frame, but that doesn't stop the guy from hitting. Ford has below-average power with room to grow into average power. He has hit 4 home runs this season in 133 at bats. His wRC+ is 113, compared to 131 in his last MiLB season. Last season during covid, he played in the Constellation League, put together by Roger Clemens, and Ford Proctor would have won MVP in that league since he by far had the best stats.

Ford has to gain more power and fill out his frame to truly succeed in the MLB. The modern game is a power game, but there will always be room for players who can get on base and play solid defense. Ford's hit tool and defense will likely carry him to the MLB.

Speed

Ford Proctor has about average speed, but he is an above-average base runner due to his baseball intelligence. Proctor is a smart ballplayer like fellow Rays players Joey Wendle, Taylor Walls, and the guy the Rays traded in Jake Cronenworth.

Ford has stolen 3 bases so far this season, but last minor league season he had 11 stolen bags. His number of stolen bases in the future will likely depend on how aggressive the Rays organization wants to be on the base paths.
