2021 Dynasty Baseball Prospect Profile: Grayson Rodriguez

on

In this week’s edition of the 2021 Dynasty Baseball Prospect Profile, we examine Grayson Rodriguez (G-Rod). Rodriguez, drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 with the 11th overall pick, is my top-ranked starting pitching prospect this year.

This kid could be special with his great mix of pitches. He has a huge, projectable frame similar to Justin Verlander‘s. He currently measures at 6’5″ and 220 lbs. G-Rod will eventually become an Orioles ace.

2021 Dynasty Baseball Prospect Profile: Grayson Rodriguez

Fastball

Grayson’s fastball sits at about 97 mph. He has good command of his fastball and is able to place it anywhere in the zone. Rodriguez is especially good at painting the corners.

Curveball

Grayson’s curveball sits around 76 mph. It has a good 11/5 break. However, Rodriguez needs to keep working on the pitch. His curve will hang at times, and he occasionally throws it too low, into the dirt. When Grayson’s curveball is working, it is just one part of a disgusting mix that can generate a very high strikeout rate.

Slider

Grayson’s slider clocks in at 86 mph. Similar to the curveball, G-Rod is still working on improving the nasty pitch. His slider has a nice whipping movement that can keep hitters striking out all day. He seems to have a better command of his slider than his curveball.

Change up

The changeup comes in at around 78 mph. This is a flatter pitch, one Grayson doesn’t use as often as his fastball, curveball, and slider. His changeup still looks good and can feed off his fastball very well. As Rodriguez continues to develop, his changeup and other pitches should continue to improve as well.

Command/Control

Grayson is still a young pitcher, but he could be very special on the mound. He continues to work on the movement, command, and control of his pitches. In a short stent to start 2021 in A+ ball, he was already promoted to AA.

This year, G-Rod has continued to prove his dominance on the mound. He has an ERA of 1.54, a FIP of 2.36, a 45.5% K%, a 5.7% BB%, and a WHIP of 0.69. His SwStr% is a nice 23.3%.
