2021 Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week: Bryce Harper

Welcome back to our 2021 Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week, where we'll be talking about Bryce Harper. This will be an interested one to write; he's a player that is considered a superstar by pretty much everyone.

I hope everyone enjoyed their fourth of July weekend! Unfortunately, the weather was dreary here in the Northeast, so that was a bit of a downer. This coming weekend I will be spending some time in Maine. My guy Dave Eddy will be filling in for the Dynasty Player of the Week next week! My itinerary for Maine will hopefully involve some paddleboarding, lobster, a Sea Dogs game, and some beach! I look forward to reporting back on my trip!

Before we get started, it's time for some cheap plugs for myself.  First, make sure you follow us on Instagram @fantasysixpack! I share my three favorite DFS plays on the page every day in our Reels feed.

Next, don't forget to tune into the On Deck Circle Podcast live on Tuesday nights. You can find it on our YouTube and our Twitter as well. I am constantly learning from my co-hosts, Dave and Jason. Speaking of Dave, here are his latest rankings

Superstar

The movie 'Superstar' starring Molly Shannon is a great film that I highly recommend. So, going into this piece, I figured this was a layup; Harper is a stud with many accolades that should be easy to write about. I was shocked to see that Harper has not made an All-Star game since 2018.

His numbers, however, have been pretty solid. He has always hit the seams off of the ball and plays solid defense. He has been in the top 95 percentile when it comes to max exit velocity five times since 2015.

Bryce has been in the league since 2013, and expectations have been high ever since he made the majors. It would have been nearly impossible for Harper to live up to those expectations. Bryce, however, has done his best to meet and sometimes exceed those expectations. He is elite in nearly every fantasy category. He has never had an OBP lower than .340(rookie year), and he has had a high OBP of .460 (2015). Bryce carries a career slash line of .275/.386/.513. This is elite; the average could get better; however, he is a player you expect 30+ bombs from. You can sacrifice some contact when the player is an elite power bat in your lineup.

Harper is a critical contributor in every fantasy scoring metric--he can even steal a few bags. Harper has been around a while, but he's currently smack-dab in his prime at the age of 28. In my opinion, Harper is one of the most unheralded superstars in the game today. I think some fans don't like how he left the Nationals. Please excuse me while I think of Soto and Harper hitting together for more than a season.

The Bryce Is Right

Going into this season, Harper's ADP was around 17. Harper is pretty reliable, and his value exceeds being picked about 17. I see him as a top ten guy in redraft and dynasty as well. Harper's numbers this year are pretty interesting as well. He is currently on pace to hit 28 homers and 50 RBI. Thus far this season, all of his 14 homers have been solo shots. This is not a Bryce Harper problem; this is a Philadelphia Phillies problem. As soon as the Phillies can get on base, Harper will continue to hit bombs and get those RBI. To get a guy like Harper at pick 17 is an absolute steal, and it is something that anyone should jump at the chance of doing so!

Dynasty Verdict

Bryce is a personal favorite. He plays the game in a fun way. I think he often gets discounted because he has been on the scene for a few years. However, he is on the right side of 30 and is contributing at a superstar rate. I recently traded for Harper in my "home" league. I sent Yermin Mercedes and Aaron Judge for Bryce Harper and Garrett Whitlock. I think Harper is a far better baseball player than Judge, and I think Harper will continue to contribute to your teams for the foreseeable future. Add him if you can! I hope everyone has a great week!
