2021 Dynasty Prospect Profile: Pedro Leon

Welcome to another edition of our player profile series. This time we take a look at Houston Astros prospect in the 2021 Dynasty Baseball Profile: Pedro Leon.

Pedro Leon has the highest floor out of everyone in the 2020-2021 IFA class. He signed with the Astros out of Cuba for four million dollars and is 22 while being listed at 5’10 and 180 pounds.

Since Leon has good bat speed and a frame being similar to guys like Yasiel Puig and Randy Arozarena, Pedro Leon has 20/20 potential. Due to his frame, swing, and speed, this guy could possibly be a perennial All-Star. His floor is of a guy like Ramon Laureano. Pedro Leon dominated the Cuban leagues with his traits of quick hands, power, and above-average speed.

Hit Tool

The biggest question with Pedro Leon is his ability to adjust to offspeed. He hits the fastball very well, but the MLB has much better pitching than the Cuban league. He has quick hands, so he adjusts to pitches all over the zone well.

The Astros have a good recent history of developing players, so Pedro Leon should be able to learn to adjust as long as he continues to work hard.

Pedro Leon has good power for a 22-year-old. He drives the fastball well and should hit plenty of home runs as he adds power and develops.

This guy is likely a 20-30 home run threat for the Astros. I think he will likely start in AA and may get called up for either September or in about 1.5 years depending on adjustments and development. He should be an exciting piece in the outfield for the Astros future.

“He is a special talent,” Astros general manager James Click stated that “He has all five tools, and a sixth one if you count just how good he is at the game of baseball from an instincts perspective — tremendous off-field guy. There’s just not enough good things that we can say about him.”

Pedro Leon has above-average speed. Currently, the Astros are fairly aggressive on the base paths, so Pedro Leon should be able to steal 20+ bases.

Due to Pedro Leon having good speed, the Astros will likely have him be the future center fielder if they don’t move Kyle Tucker to center field.
