2021 Fantasy Baseball Week 17 xwOBA Targets

on

Welcome to the 2021 Fantasy Baseball xwOBA Targets – Week 17.

This a series we started this season on Fantasy Six Pack where we look for under rostered xwOBA targets in Fantasy Baseball for the week ahead. We set the cutoff at 65% rostered on Yahoo and 170 plate appearances for this update. xwOBA data via Baseball Savant.

Darin Ruf actually leads this chart with a .398 xwOBA, but I removed him as he is not a realistic Fantasy option at this point. The San Francisco Giants, when all healthy, will have a rotation in the outfield including Ruf, Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, Steven Duggar, Austin Slater, LaMonte Wade Jr. and newly acquire Kris Bryant! Bryant will play 3B until Evan Longoria returns. Ruf plays first base as well but Brandon Belt will be back.

MLB.com does a great job explaining xwOBA vs wOBA.

“Expected Weighted On-base Average (xwOBA) is formulated using exit velocity, launch angle and, on certain types of batted balls, Sprint Speed.

xwOBA is more indicative of a player’s skill than regular wOBA, as xwOBA removes defense from the equation. Hitters, and likewise pitchers, are able to influence exit velocity and launch angle but have no control over what happens to a batted ball once it is put into play.”

Angels catcher Max Stassi continues to impress and has raised his season batting average to .305. He has eight hits in his last five games played with a double, triple and two home runs. He hit .339 in July with 1.038 OPS.

Brandon Nimmo led all qualified hitters in July with a .442 BABIP. Avisail Garcia and A.J. Pollock were two of the 15 other qualified hitters with a .400+ BABIP.

Chicago Cubs infielder Patrick Wisdom should see consistent playing time at third and first base with Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant traded.

The Nationals were sellers at the trade deadline but Josh Bell is still around and has hit five home runs in the last two weeks.
