This week we are adding one pitcher and one hitter to the drop list. We review the performance of the Week 7 drops to see if they’re still drop worthy.

Andrew Heaney, SP, Los Angeles Angels

Heaney has been allowing way too many hard-hit balls, resulting in more hits and runs. Statcast records Heaney’s hard-hit percentage at 46.5 percent. Through 39 innings he has a poor 5.31 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and eight home runs allowed.

The one positive on his season is an above-average strikeout rate of 30.5 percent. Still, these strikeouts do not outweigh the ERA and WHIP.

Heaney just does not have it right now and should not be rostered until he starts allowing fewer runs.

Yasmani Grandal, C, Chicago White Sox

Grandal is batting .133, a career-low. This will likely rise due to his BABIP being .122.  His 121 plate appearances are 12th for catchers in 2021 and while that is not bad we would like to see more opportunities for his batting average to rise.

His backup, Zack Collins, has been taking some time from Grandal but will not take the starting gig.

In previous seasons Grandal has proved valuable with the long ball. He belted 22 plus homers each season from 2016-2019, but never let his batting average fall below .228. This season we could still see 20 home runs from Grandal but at a greater cost in the batting average department.

If your league allows you to play without a catcher, you should consider dropping Grandal for a pitcher to stream.

Performance Review

Eduardo Escobar, 2B/3B, Arizona Diamondbacks

Escobar had a great week, blasting three home runs in 29 AB for 8 RBI. The strikeouts are still high but I am taking him off the drop list after this performance.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr., OF, Toronto Blue Jays

Gurriel Jr. had a nice week batting .385, including one double. His counting stats are not there yet but props to you if you held onto him.

Joey Gallo, OF, Texas Rangers

The only positive from Gallo this week was his eight walks. Otherwise, his numbers were right on par with the rest of his 2021 leaving him on the drop list.

Jorge Soler, OF/DH, Kansas City Royals

Soler continued to struggle this week, only recording one hit in 18 at-bats. He also struck out nine times in this span. Soler is still on the drop list.

Didi Gregorius, SS, Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies placed Gregorius on the injured list Tuesday due to an elbow impingement and it’s not yet clear when he’ll be back.

According to Spotrac, 422 MLB players have been placed on the IL thus far in 2021. Spotrac recorded 563 players placed on the IL in total for 2019.

This many players on the IL is affecting almost every Fantasy Baseball team. It is hard to make a case for Gregorius to be on fantasy teams longer if you’re already dealing with injuries.
