2021 Fantasy Football: Matthew Stafford Traded to the Los Angeles Rams

on

The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams have wasted no time in looking forward to the 2021 NFL season. Matthew Stafford has been traded to the Los Angeles Rams! Jared Goff is part of the trade package of draft picks headed back to the Lions.

According to Adam Schefter, two future first-round picks and a third-round pick are also going to Detroit.

For those that do not know, the new Detroit Lions General Manager, Brad Holmes, spent 18 years with the Rams. It looks like his buddy Les Snead (Rams GM) was helping him get his feet wet!

The Los Angeles Rams have now handed out contract extensions to Goff, Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks, only to turn around and trade them away!

Los Angeles doesn’t have a first-round draft pick until the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Rams and Lions are scheduled to play each other in the upcoming NFL season!

Below I will breakdown Matthew Stafford’s potential Fantasy Football impact for the upcoming NFL season. I will also highlight his career statistics vs other QBs since the Detroit Lions draft him first overall in the 2009 NFL Draft.

I will also talk about Jared Goff for a couple of sentences.

Carson Wentz was traded by the Eagles to the Colts. Click to read Bob’s breakdown of the trade here!

2021 Fantasy Football: Matthew Stafford Traded to the Los Angeles Rams

Stafford’s Career with the Lions

Stafford is one of 10 quarterbacks in the NFL with 12 seasons under their belt since 2009.

He is one of seven QBs to throw for 45,000 passing yards since entering the NFL.

Matthew Stafford is one of six quarterbacks with 6,000 pass attempts since he was drafted.

Only 11 quarterbacks have won more games in the NFL since Stafford was drafted in 2009. Stafford’s 74 wins are tied with Andy Dalton. However, he is tied with Philip Rivers for the most losses during that span, with 90.

On a positive note, Stafford leads the NFL in 4th quarter come from behind wins with 31!

Stafford was blessed to play alongside Calvin Johnson, to begin his career. Johnson accounted for 31 percent of Matthew Stafford’s career passing yards and 34 percent of his touchdowns between 2009 and 2015, when Megatron decided to retire at the age of 30 after just 9 seasons with the Lions.

Stafford’s 2021 Fantasy Football Impact

Stafford will now play for Head Coach Sean McVay who at times made Jared Goff look like Joe Montana.

Matthew Stafford is a veteran QB, jumping into an explosive offense with weapons like Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Cam Akers, with a defense that features Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. That is a Super Bowl contender.

This is a first for Stafford. It should be all the motivation he needs to have quite possibly the best season of his career.

It wasn’t just two seasons ago that Stafford was 3rd in QB Fantasy Points per game before a back injury ended his season.

You will see when 2021 Fantasy Football rankings are release that Fantasy Experts will be all over this Rams offense with Stafford under center.

Jared Goff

Goff was under incredible pressure to succeed as the number one overall draft pick in 2016 for a Franchise that had just moved to Los Angeles, from St. Louis, and was building a brand new stadium.

Let’s not forget that he threw 60 touchdown passes in his first two full NFL seasons from 2017-18 and led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance, only to be beaten by the one and only Tom Brady.

Since then, the Rams offense as a whole declined and we saw Todd Gurley get cut and join the Atlanta Falcons last season.

Goff has a chance to be part of a rebuilding effort in Detroit, but the Lions will see star wide receiver Kenny Golladay enter free agency this offseason.

Goff will be handing the ball off to De’Andre Swift quite often in 2021 but does have a stud tight end in T.J. Hockenson.

The Lions just hired Dan Campbell to be their Head Coach and Anthony Lynn is the new offensive coordinator.

Remember when the Rams traded up in 2016 with the Tennesse Titans to select Jared Goff?

The Rams sent their 2016 1st round pick (15th overall subsequently tradedCorey Coleman), 2016 2nd round pick (43rd overall, Austin Johnson), 2016 2nd round pick (45th overall, Derrick Henry), 2016 3rd round pick (76th overall subsequently tradedShon Coleman), 2017 1st round pick (5th overall, Corey Davis) and 2017 3rd round pick (100th overall, Jonnu Smith)!

Conclusion

The Rams did what they had to do to win now. Question is, did they overpay for a 32-year-old Stafford when Deshaun Watson
was possibly available via trade.

I honestly don’t believe you can be mad at either side for doing what they did.

The Rams are ready to compete for Super Bowl LVI.

The Detroit Lions are rebuilding a Franchise that has just three playoff appearances since the 2000 NFL Season.

I think both teams did the right thing here.
