Looking to ruffle some feathers in your Fantasy Hockey league?

Look no further.

Whether you’re on the outside looking in, or sitting atop your standings, with the 2021 Fantasy Hockey Week 7 Planner, we’ll give you the framework for success for the upcoming week of hockey.

On Saturday,  goaltender Jordan Binnington was pulled against the San Jose Sharks, leading to one of the scrappiest exit sequences in recent memory. At the time, his team was losing, but he showed he wasn’t going down without a fight (or three).

Fantasy owners should always look ahead to matchups, trends, and strength of schedule when determining potential moves. With the 2021 Fantasy Hockey Week 7 Planner, we look to channel our inner Jordan Binnington, fighting our way toward the Fantasy Playoffs.

Weekly Streaming MVP

Mats Zuccarello, RW, Minnesota Wild (40% Rostered)

Maybe it’s being fresh from injury; maybe it’s the chemistry he shares with linemates. Regardless of the reason why, one thing is certain — Mats Zuccarello is on fire.

Zuccarello had been on the long-term IR with a broken arm for months, dating back to last season. Since he’s been back, the ‘Norwegian Hobbit’ has been producing numbers that outshine his understated stature.

At five-foot-eight, Zuccarello isn’t the biggest guy on the ice, but he’s been lighting the lamp for Minnesota and producing gigantic fantasy numbers in the process. Since his return on Feb. 16, Zuccarello has scored three goals, adding eight assists for a total of 11 points in seven games. Riding a six-game point streak, Zuccarello is already in mid-season form.

Zuccarello’s ownership in Yahoo leagues has spiked to 40% ownership across leagues in the past week, thanks to his excellent start to the season. Fantasy owners need to jump on the Zucc-train as he can single-handedly reinvigorate your season, as he’s done with the Wild.

Honorable Mention

  • Brian Elliot, G, Philadelphia Flyers (30% Rostered)
  • Drake Batherson, RW, Ottawa Senators (19% Rostered)
  • Carl Soderberg, C/LW, Chicago Blackhawks (6% Rostered)

Last week’s MVP

  • Joe Thornton, C/LW, Toronto Maple Leafs (39% Rostered)

The NHL schedule has returned to some semblance of normalcy ahead of Week 7, where no major COVID outbreaks or postponements have yet to cause huge swings in man-games for fantasy fanatics. Nonetheless, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of potential waiver pickups and the schedule is crucial in determining streaming options.

While a majority of NHL clubs are set to play four games, the Detroit Red Wings play only two. Their roster already isn’t the best for fantasy owners to pluck talent from and the lack of games should be enough to turn off prospective owners.

Teams to Target

Calgary Flames

Notable Players:

  • Johnny Gaudreau
  • Elias Lindholm
  • Matthew Tkachuk

The Calgary Flames snapped a two-game losing streak with an emphatic 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators last Saturday.

David Rittich has been the man between the pipes since Jacob Markstrom’s upper-body injury left him sidelined since Feb.20. Markstrom has been skating with the team and is considered day-to-day for the time being.

Markstrom’s All-Star pedigree is certainly the more attractive option between the two netminders. However, given Marstrom’s injury history, the Flames may opt to sprinkle in starts from Rittich more often as opposed to utilizing Markstrom as a bonafide workhorse.

Regardless of the goaltending dynamic, fantasy owners should pay attention to Calgary Flames players this week as they have a laughably favorable schedule. Games versus Ottawa Senators is always a darling matchup, as their -30 goal differential is overwhelmingly the worst in the NHL. Calgary will look to get back into the playoff picture as they faceoff against Ottawa three times in Week 7.

Notable Players:

  • Nathan MacKinnon
  • Mikko Rantanen
  • Cale Makar

Not only is Colorado one of the top teams in the NHL, but their outlook for Week 7 is also as bright as the California sun.

Colorado has an optimal schedule, playing both the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks twice. The two squads combine for a -37 goal differential. The Anaheim Ducks have struggled to score this season, with an NHL-worst 41 goals, while San Jose’s total goals against ranks fourth-worst with 71.

The bottom line is that fantasy owners should look to take advantage of the cakewalk of a schedule. Brandon Saad and Ander Burakovski should be on your radar, as their presence on the second powerplay unit could translate to fantasy points.

Teams to Avoid

Detroit Red Wings

Notable players:

  • Dylan Larkin
  • Bobby Ryan
  • Tyler Bertuzzi

The Red Wings have been in a rebuild for the past couple of seasons. While they can still make most games interesting, their lack of a big-name goalscorer certainly hinders their offensive output.

Detroit’s youthful roster may have their fanbase excited for the future, but if you’re looking to participate in your fantasy hockey playoffs in the near future, look elsewhere for production.

This week, the Red Wings only have two games, and as mentioned before, this lack of volume should make fantasy managers wary of any waiver grabs.

Chicago Blackhawks

Notable Players:

  • Partick Kane
  • Alex DeBrincat
  • Pias Suter

Despite being without longtime captain and leader, Jonathan Toews, the Chicago Blackhawks have played surprisingly well.

Thanks in large part to their top line of Kane, DeBrincat, and Suter, Chicago has gone 7-3-0 in their last 10 outings. Kevin Lankinen has also played excellent in goal, posting winning eight games, while posting a .921 save percentage and 2.59 goals-against average.

While I believe the Blackhawks will continue to impress, this week will be nightmarish. Chicago has a three-game homestand against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa’s combination of strength, speed, and scoring ability is simply too much for Chicago and fantasy owners should fade Blackhawks players accordingly.

Trade Rumors

Virtanen to the Ducks

Over the past week, Jake Virtanen’s less than stellar output has come under ample media scrutiny as trade talks ramp up with Anaheim.

The Canucks winger has only registered a single point in 19 games this season and it seems like his departure from Vancouver is inevitable. While Virtanen hasn’t been close to fantasy relevant this season, trading him would leave a gap on the team’s second line.

Anaheim has reportedly been in talks with the Canucks brass for the former sixth-overall draft pick.

Fantasy owners should keep an eye on how this potential deal shakes out as a reshuffling of the depth chart Vancouver might change the fantasy landscape for the squad.
