2021 NFL Mock Draft: Final First Round

on

The last time we met, Bob, Jon, Kyle and Selyan shared their first-round mock drafts during the Final Four. Since then, the New York Jets traded Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens acquired the 31st overall pick in the draft, trading Orlando Brown to the Kansas City Chiefs. Below is an updated 2021 NFL Mock Draft – our final first round!

QB Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) will be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

With the second overall pick, the New York Jets are locked in on Zach Wilson (BYU). The Jets also have the 23rd pick in round one.

The Niners are clearly targeting a quarterback after trading up to land the 3rd overall pick, but is it Mac Jones, Justin Fields or Trey Lance?

Do the Atlanta Falcons look for Matt Ryan‘s replacement with the fourth pick or look to add a playmaker like TE Kyle Pitts (Florida)?

Will the Cincinnati Bengals pass on adding OT Penei Sewell (Oregon) to protect Joe Burrow to add his college teammate, WR Ja’Marr Chase (LSU)?

Does anybody have any idea what direction the Miami Dolphins are leaning with the sixth pick? They also have the 18th pick.

UPDATE – After publishing this post, the Carolina Panthers traded QB Teddy Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos!

Selyan’s Notes

  • The NFL Draft is almost here and there’s a very good chance we could see three quarterbacks go with the first three picks (which would be a first since 1999).
  • Concerning Mac Jones to the 49ers: where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Mac Jones’ pro day is the only quarterback pro day attended by Kyle Shanahan in this draft cycle. That and the aggressive trade-up says a lot about what the 49ers might be up to. I think Shanahan wants an accurate field-reader who can make all the right throws from day 1: Mac Jones is that guy.
  • The Bengals hold a pivotal spot in the draft with the fifth pick. The decision to take an offensive playmaker or a protector for Burrow could shape how the rest of the draft shakes out. Sewell is the consensus pick on most mock drafts but it isn’t a lock. One could say the Bengals’ priority on the offensive line is actually on the interior, which has a lot of depth on day two. Reuniting Burrow with his college playmaker Ja’Marr Chase makes a ton of sense.
  • The Patriots landing Micah Parsons feels like a good fit, if the Pats were to stay put and the Penn State stud slides a little bit. He’s versatile, explosive with a nose for the football. He ticks a lot of what Belichick looks for on the second level of his defense.

Bob’s Notes

  • I’m still not buying all the Justin Fields smoke. It almost sounds to me like the information is just being lead out there to try to keep the Jets away from taking Fields. Call me crazy, but it almost seems like too much anti-Fields info.
  • A popular pick for the Steelers is going to be Najee Harris. However, again I decided to go against the grain knowing full well that the Steelers value defense very highly in the 1st Round. I like Greg Newsome to slot right into that Cover 3 scheme.

Kyle’s Notes

  • Recently there has been a ton of smoke around the 49ers pick. Will it be Fields? Lance? Jones? What’s the play? Well, It’s going to be Fields. Along this trepid journey, the only name we’ve seen stay consistently at the top is Fields. The Ohio State QB was projected to be the second QB off the board all season before Zach Wilson took that spot. His talent, tape, and workouts make me believe that he’s the 3rd best QB in the draft and that’s who the 49ers will select.
  • Avoiding the smoke screens at all costs. The Eagles have been projected to draft a wideout since day one of the draft process. Nothing is changing in that department for me. With the team releasing both DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery this offseason, the move needs to be done. And what better move to bring in someone like Waddle? Before the injury mid-season, he was outplaying Heisman trophy winner DeVonta Smith. His talent and the Eagles clear need make for a perfect fit.

Jon’s Notes

  • The draft really does not start until pick 4 for me. Atlanta holds all the cards. Do they take Pitts and pair him with Julio and Ridley or take a predecessor to Matt Ryan? One thing Atlanta may consider is “when will we have this chance again to draft a QB high?” That could go a long way in their decision.
  • Cincy and Miami drafting Chase/Smith or Waddle to reunite them with their college quarterbacks also would not surprise me. If I am Cincy though, how do you not take Sewell to protect Joe Burrow.
  • In a DB rich draft, it is not crazy to think five could go in the first round, with one as early as 10 to Dallas.
  • Towards the end of round one is where you could see more WRs go. Elijah Moore, Rondale Moore, Rashod Bateman all could go in the bottom of the first to the likes of the Packers or the Ravens.
