2021 NFL Mock Draft: Super Bowl LV Edition

on

The last time we met, Bob & Jon shared their top 18 picks ahead of Super Wild Card Weekend. Kyle & Selyan have joined in on the fun for full first round 2021 NFL Mock Draft: Super Bowl LV Edition.

Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and future picks. The Lions can now shift their focus to a non QB in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. This also certainly set the floor for any team looking to trade for Deshaun Watson this offseason!

It’s pretty much a lock that Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) will be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

What will the Miami Dolphins do with two of the top 18 picks?

There are serious question marks surrounding the New York Jets pick (2nd overall) and the Atlanta Falcons picks (4th 0verall). Will either team also draft a quarterback?

If the Jets decide Justin Fields (Ohio St.)  or Zach Wilson (BYU) are the future of their franchise, where will they trade Sam Darnold and what value does he hold?

Is Atlanta ready to select Matt Ryan‘s replacement?

Mac Jones improved his draft stock at the Senior Bowl but is it enough to secure a first-round selection?

Changes from Jon’s previous mock

  • The Lions pass on a QB with Goff in town now and take Jaylen Waddle to add to Goff’s weapons. With both Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay becoming free agents, Waddle will be a Week 1 starter
  • Broncos take Trey Lance, after the Lions pass on a QB, allowing one to fall to them. The Lock era is over in Denver
  • Mac Jones jumps in the top 18 with the 49ers taking him. Jones continues to impress scouts and would fit nicely in Kyle Shanahan‘s system
  • Speaking of jumping into the top 18, after blowing people away at the senior bowl Kadarius Toney shoots up into round one and is selected by the Patriots. New England’s offense lacks playmakers and add a good one here in Toney. He can line up anywhere on the field and is an instant upgrade to a lackluster group of receivers
  • The Chargers jump on Kyle Pitts early. Instead of spending the cap space to re-sign Hunter Henry, they draft his replacement in Kyle Pitts

Changes from Bob’s previous mock

  • Originally I had Atlanta selecting the heir apparent to Matt Ryan, with Zach Wilson. However, after diving into how their defense performed over the course of the season, corner comes as a great need for them. Atlanta allowed the most passing yards per game in 2020, and Surtain is a great start to fixing that problem.
  • Carolina’s interest in trading for Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson tells me they’re looking to improve the QB position. Granted half the teams in the league could make a case at taking a stab at upgrading their QB position with Watson. Zach Wilson is my best QB remaining on the board, so that’s who I’m gonna roll with here.
  • I had Arizona originally selecting CB Jaycee Horn here, I’ve made the pivot to Jaylen Waddle WR. What a better situation for a rookie WR to land in? High octane offense, Hopkins taking the NO. 1 coverage, and an accurate QB in Kyler Murray throwing the rock. This landing spot would offer a great case for Jaylen Waddle being the Rookie Fantasy WR1.
  • Since Waddle got sniped by the Cardinals, I gotta take a LB I love in Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah with Pick 18 to the Dolphins. JOK’s versatility makes him a great fit for Flores’ defensive scheme. Whether it’s in coverage, run defense, or blitzing the QB JOK would shine in this defense.

Kyle’s Picks

15.) New England Patriots – Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

Finally, the Patriots find themselves with some offensive talent. And most importantly someone to take over the massive hole left behind by future Hall of Famer, Rob Gronkowski.

This season, the Patriots recorded their worst season passing the football in over a decade. With the offense needing some upgrades at the skill positions this pick is a perfect fit for Head Coach Bill Belichick.

19.) Washington Football Team – Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

From Alex Smith to Taylor Heinicke, the Football Team was one of the league’s best stories. After winning an awful NFC East, one thing was obvious. The offense for the Football Team needs an upgrade, most glaring at the QB position.

Mac Jones makes for the perfect fit in a ready-made offense. Jones is a prototype QB that reminds me a lot of…Alex Smith. A true game manager, but with Washington’s elite defense all they need is someone who can make smart timely throws.

This is where Mac Jones comes in.

Selyan’s Picks

11.) New York GiantsAzeez Ojulari, LB, Georgia

Ojulari is bursting with potential and will not even be 21 when the 2021 NFL Draft comes around.

He plays with terrific leverage and an already impressive arsenal of pass rush moves. He’s a strong force player against the run and has the athleticism to chase.

Ojulari’s the best 3-4 OLB in the draft for Giants Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham, who loves to find exotic ways to bring pressure.

He’d be cooking with fire adding Ojulari to an already potent interior rushing corp.

18.) Miami Dolphins – Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame

The Bednarik Award finalist is my favorite linebacker not named Micah Parsons. Owusu-Koramoah is a fluid and fast athlete that shined in so many facets of the game for Notre Dame.

He’s a terrific coverage linebacker who fits the prototypical mold of the modern NFL Will, with the intelligence to run fit with discipline.

He can hang in man in the slot with the best of them. His added value on special teams is the cherry on top. He’s a perfect fit for Brian Flores‘ defense, looking to add versatility to the second level.
