2022-23 Fantasy Hockey Week 13 Weekly Planner

Goodbye, 2022. Hello, 2023! These past 12 months have had some awesome moments for the game, and we hope that 2023 brings even more! And with it, let's ring in the new year with the 2022-23 Fantasy Hockey Week 13 Weekly Planner!

The league held a mandatory three-day break (unless you were on the Maple Leafs) to celebrate Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day with family and friends, but we still found some great action on the ice. The Hurricanes stretched their win streak to nine with a win over the Blackhawks, McDavid continued his 16-game point streak with a game-winning goal, and we had two 49-save performances, one each out of Cam Talbot and John Gibson.

Week 13 is headlined by the annual Winter Classic game, taking place at historic Fenway Park on January 2nd. The league's best Boston Bruins are set to host the ageless Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins. It'll be the Bruins' third time hosting the Winter Classic (4th game in total). The Penguins' third time playing in the special event.

Will we see teams get hit with a holiday break hangover? Or will teams cash in on their New Year's resolutions? Let's get into it with the 2022-23 Fantasy Hockey Week 13 Weekly Planner.

2022-23 Fantasy Hockey Week 13 Weekly Planner

December 31, 2022 - January 6, 2022

Top Targets

Jared Spurgeon, Defense, Minnesota Wild (62% Rostered)

Jared Spurgeon can be one of the best defensive options that you can look for to fill the void of an injury to your team while also staying in the action. Spurgeon has been a consistent offensive contributor from the back end. He has had at least one shot on goal in every game over the past month. He has also added another nine points during the month of December (two goals and seven assists). When it comes to defense, he is a shot-blocking machine. Over the past four games, Spurgeon has blocked 15 shots so keep this in mind if your league includes blocked shots for scoring!

Max Pacioretty, Left Wing, Carolina Hurricanes (49% Rostered)

Although he is coming off of a major injury, we recommend looking through the list of free agents in your league to see if you can grab Max Pacioretty while you can. The 34-year-old is eyeing his return to the ice after tearing his Achilles in the offseason and hopes to play a key role with his new team in Carolina. It is unsure if Pacioretty will be in the lineup within the next game or two, but coach Rod Brind'Amour suggests that the veteran is well ahead of schedule. Max has made a positive impact on all his team's throughout his career, and we expect that he will fit in well with the Hurricanes as they look to finally break through their recent playoff woes.

Erik Gustafsson, Defense, Washington Capitals (48% Rostered)

If your fantasy team needs an instant boost from the defensive end, look for Erik Gustafsson and try to ride the hot hand! The 30-year-old defenseman has been extremely productive for the Capitals' offense after the team lost John Carlson to injury, and may remain this way if Carlson remains out. Gustafsson is currently riding a six-game point streak that has seen him put up five goals and five assists. The hot streak won't last forever, but look to be a part of the crazy ride that Gustafsson is currently on.

Calle Jarnkrok, Left Wing/Right Wing, Toronto Maple Leafs (10% Rostered)

Another player making an immediate impact in the lineup following an injury stint is Calle Jarnkrok. After missing seven games with a groin injury, Jarnkrok returned to the lineup with three goals and three assists over the next four games. He finds himself on a line with John Tavares and Mitch Marner for now, as the Leafs have been struck by the injury bug as of late. If he keeps this kind of play up, look for Jarnkrok to extend his stay in the Leafs' top two lines.

Injury Alerts

Josh Morrissey, Defense, Winnipeg Jets

The 2022-23 season is without a doubt a career year for Jets' defender Josh Morrissey, and we hope that injuries are not going to derail what he is striving for. The team's top defenseman exited Thursday's game against the Canucks with an undisclosed injury, and the team is hoping to have him back as soon as possible. Head coach Rick Bowness notes that Morrissey will likely be a game-time decision leading into their next contest, but he is still undergoing further treatment for his injury suffered.

Vladimir Tarasenko, Right Wing, St. Louis Blues

Illnesses during the winter are something that you cannot escape, and the same goes for professional athletes! Without any indication, the Blues announced that their third-leading scorer on the team, Vladimir Tarasenko, would be unavailable for Thursday night's game. He then missed out on the team's practice on Friday. And the team did not have any further updates on Vlad. The timetable for his return is unknown. If you have Tarasenko on the team, we would recommend monitoring the situation!

Valeri Nichushkin, Left Wing/Right Wing, Colorado Avalanche

After missing 17 games earlier in the season with an ankle injury, it appears that Valeri Nichushkin has re-aggravated the injury and will miss more time. The Avs have announced that there is no timetable for Nichushkin's return to the ice. Yet the surgically repaired ankle looks to be an issue once again. He will be a key loss for the team as they will likely have to look for a long-term replacement on the wing.

Team Worth Watching This Week

Carolina Hurricanes

At this point in time, there is no hotter team in hockey than the Carolina Hurricanes. Heading into Week 13, the Canes have a 9-0-1 record over their last ten games and it looks like this week is a chance to further their division lead. The team will hit the ice three times during the week, with their first matchup against the Devils who sit directly behind them in the division standings. The Devils have come back down to earth after a scorching start, and the odds will definitely be behind the Hurricanes. Following the Devils, the Canes will meet the Rangers at Madison Square Garden before heading home to face the Predators. Look for the Canes to ride into 2023 with the same success they finished 2022.
