2023 Dynasty Baseball Buy or Sell

Welcome to the 2022 Dynasty Baseball Buy or Sell 7-1-22.

Its been a few weeks since my last Buy or Sell submission due to personal reasons. So I want to give a quick shoutout to Dave Eddy for filling in nicely the past few weeks.

Today is July 1st, we are in full swing of summer, and the Fourth of July is here in just a few days. This next week is an exceptional time of the year for me. For many different reasons, one being I celebrate another year around the sun and celebrate my Birthday on July 8th.

So between my Birthday and the Anniversary of America's independence, there are a ton of memories throughout my life that gives me tons of nostalgia. There are also just a lot of fun events and activities to do this time of the year.

Some of my favorite summer activities include going to the carnival, watching the July 4th parade, watching (my favorite baseball movie) The Sandlot, backyard barbeques, and taking the Metra to downtown Chicago to watch the fireworks over Lake Michigan, and countless other activities. Let me know down in the comments what is your favorite activity or thing about the summer and the July 4th time frame.

Now lets get into this weeks Dynasty Buy or Sell!

2022 Dynasty Baseball Buy or Sell 7-1-22

Elly De La Cruz, 3B/SS, Cincinnati Reds

If you are looking for the next young boom or bust prospect. Look no further than the switch-hitting 20-year-old infielder in the Reds organization. Elly came onto the fantasy scene in 2021 when he slashed 296/336/539 across two levels of the low minors.

Now in 2022, his raw power is translating to in-game power. So far in 62 games at High-A, Elly has already hit his career-high with 14 home runs. Furthermore, his 29% home run to fly ball ratio leads all High-A Central hitters. Also, his 272 ISO ranks as the third-best among all High-A Central hitters.

Elly is not just contributing to the power department either. He also has a career-high in the stolen bases too. He has swiped 22 bases while only being caught four times, which is good enough for an 85% success rate. Elly's 22 thefts rank as the fourth most among all High-A Central League players.

While the strikeout rate is still concerning as it sits around 30% and his walk rate sits below 10%. He has a good hit tool that allows for solid contact and his inflated BABIP would explain his career 293 batting average.

Elly has a great power-speed combo that dynasty managers look for in top prospects. While Elly is still young and raw and resembles that of a true boom or bust prospect. I will be leaning more towards the boom side than the bust. If you can get the chance to pry Elly away from the current owner, just do it!

Clay Holmes, RHP, New York Yankees

If you have been paying attention to Major League Baseball in 2022, then you might know that the Yankees have the best record in the league. However, you may or may not know that they have been without their top closer Aroldis Chapman who has been sidelined since May 22nd.

Since then Clay Holmes has taken over the closer duty and hasn't missed a beat. Since May 18th Holmes has been almost perfect (14/15) in save opportunities. Even before being the closer, Holmes was called upon for high leverage situations, displayed by his seven holds.

It's not just the saves that make Holmes an anomaly the past month. He has also been a very strong and dominant pitcher. Suppose we look back over the past month. His 0.49 ERA ranks as the sixth-best amongst all relievers, and his 2.01 xFIP ranks as the seventh-best among all relievers. Furthermore, his 12 saves are the most among all relievers since May 18th.

Even when you look at his advanced stats, I feel like a bull, as all I can see is red. Holmes currently ranks in the 100th percentile for xERA, xwOBA, and xSLG, while also ranking in the 98th percentile in xBA, Barrel rate, and Chase rate.

As you can see Holmes has been downright filthy this season. However, Chapman is scheduled back from the injured list in the next few days, presumably relegating Holmes back to a set-up role. I also do not value relief pitching very highly, even in saves+holds leagues. Therefore you should be looking to cash in on Holmes dominate 2022 and sell him now while his value is at an all-time high.
