Welcome back to the 2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of The Week series! I hope everyone had a wonderful long MLK Day weekend! This week we have the 2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of The Week: Garrett Whitlock.
It does not look like the lockout will be ending anytime soon for the MLB. Pitchers and catchers are supposed to report within the next 30 days, which is looking more and more unlikely.
I look forward to baseball season more than any other season, the reasons being the warm weather, summer, hot dogs, and most of all, Fantasy Baseball. We have not had a “normal” Fantasy season in two seasons. I hope that this year we can start up and have a return to some sort of baseball normalcy.
Last week we looked at the Dodgers young slugger Cody Bellinger. This week we are going off the beaten path and will look at a pitcher who I think is flying under the radar a bit. Our 2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of The Week is Garrett Whitlock. Whitlock is currently ranked 340th in Dave’s most recent rankings.

In 2021 I had a Fantasy Baseball epiphany, and that was the relievers do matter. I have been anti-reliever for my Fantasy lifetime. However, relievers can help you with multiple categories, and Whitlock does precisely that. He contributes in all pitching categories.
Going into 2021, he was still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and was ready to roll through spring training. Whitlock’s first six outings were a sign of things to come. He didn’t give up a run and struck out 18 batters in 13 1/3 innings. These numbers I consider with an asterisk; I say that because they had some reigns on Whitlock with him just coming off of surgery.
Garrett Whitlock in 2021
- Innings: 73.1
- ERA: 1.96
- WHIP: 1.10
- Saves/Holds: 16
- K: 81
- K/9: 9.36
In 2021 he was 16th among relievers in the league in WAR with 1.6. This is a great spot for someone getting their first taste of the big league’s post-TJ surgery.
The greatest thing of all is the story of Whitlock. He was a middle-tier prospect for the Yankees who had to undergo Tommy-John surgery and was eligible in the rule-5 draft. My Boston Red Sox selected (stole) Whitlock from the Yankees in the 2020 Rule 5 draft. He entered the season as a flyer and ended the season as the best reliever on a playoff team.

Whitlock has electric stuff and can be targeted very late in drafts. As mentioned before, Dave is our ratings guru and he has Whitlock in the mid 300’s. This is an immense value at the price you’re paying. In the world of Dynasty Fantasy Baseball, it is essential to maximize value.
Of course, things like this can fluctuate. However, I do not think it’s out of the question that we see Whitlock without a cap on his workload see a jump within the top 225 players at some point this season. This gives us a fantastic price for a player that I think has an incredibly high ceiling when it comes to relievers.
That brings us to something that makes his price even better! What if I told you that Whitlock was not a reliever and he was a starter? This has been discussed by both Chaim Bloom and Alex Cora. As it stands currently, the Red Sox rotation looks like this: Nathan Eovaldi, Chris Sale, and Nick Pivetta. That leaves three spots up for grabs for Rich Hill, Mike Wacha, Tanner Houck, and Garrett Whitlock.
I’m sure once the lockout is over, we might see some other additions to this group, but currently, that’s where the rotation sits. Now, as a Dynasty Fantasy owner, where do I want Whitlock to be? Well, I think I need another season of Whitlock in the pen and perhaps see what we have in the 2023 season.
This might be your last opportunity to get Whitlock before he breaks out. I don’t want to sound crazy here, but we may have a new Josh Hader on our hands. As many remember, Hader was looked at as a starter. However, he was so dominant in the bullpen that the Brewers found themselves with an All-Star closer. So please make sure you are buying Whitlock now before it is too late!
See you next week for another 2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week!
