2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 16 Pitching Planner

Welcome to the 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 16 Pitching Planner.

The 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 16 Pitching Planner is here to help all Fantasy Baseball managers make the tough decisions on which pitchers are deserving of making the team.

This week all 37 two-start pitchers are listed and receive a letter grade between A, B, C, D, or F. This ranking is based on the pitcher's previous statistics, and their upcoming opponent as well.

Below the two-start pitchers, an additional 25 pitchers are recommended to be Started, Benched, or Streamed. Be sure to grab those streaming options off the waiver wire this week before the opponent does it first.

Two-Start Pitchers

Here's a quick rundown on the rankings.

A: Aces, start without questioning it.

B: Reliable starter but not as dependable as the grade A's.

C: Middle of the pack players. Usually provide decent Fantasy value and can be started.

D: Risky streamers, not trustworthy, but Fantasy managers can start them if necessary.

F: Leave on the waiver wire, unlikely to provide any Fantasy production.

Start 'em

Jacob deGrom (NYM) - at Washington Nationals

deGrom is set to make his much-awaited season debut and he's a must-start on the 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 16 Pitching Planner. This will be his first big league appearance since July 7, 2021. He finished last season with a 7-2 record, 1.08 ERA, 45.1% strikeout rate, and 3.4% walk rate.

deGrom has been the best pitcher in baseball when healthy. Despite the injury that has kept him out for more than half the season, Fantasy managers drafted deGrom at an ADP of 66.7 (fifth round) this season, according to FantasyPros ADP Consensus.

Merrill Kelly (ARI) - vs Colorado Rockies

Kelly is currently in a stretch of five straight quality starts and three straight wins. In these last five games, he's allowed just six runs in 34.1 innings.

Fantasy managers roster Kelly in 71% of leagues, but with his recent performances, this should be higher. Be sure to start Kelly in as many Fantasy lineups as possible this week.

Noah Syndergaard (LAA) - vs Oakland Athletics

Syndergaard has pitched well this season but owns a 5-8 record with a couple of tough-luck losses coming in July. In his last appearance, the Angels righty pitched 5.2 innings against the Kansas City Royals. He allowed six hits and two walks for just one earned run and still came away with the loss. On July 5th versus the Miami Marlins, Syndergaard pitched five innings and struck out eight batters. However, he allowed five hits for two earned runs and received the loss.

These losses could be steering Fantasy managers away from Syndergaard however, he should remain in the Fantasy lineup. The Oakland Athletics have the lowest OPS (.617), and second-fewest runs (345) in all MLB.

Johnny Cueto (CHW) - at Texas Rangers

Cueto has five straight quality starts, in this stretch, he has allowed nine runs in 33 innings. Despite this run of success, Fantasy managers roster Cueto in just 44% of leagues. This should be expected to rise as Fantasy managers are guaranteed to ride the hot streak.

Nick Pivetta (BOS) - at Kansas City Royals

Pivetta was labeled a bench 'em in two of the last three Pitching Planners, but today he makes it as a start 'em. In the two weeks leading up to the All-Star break, he was struggling as he allowed 20 earned runs in 13.1 innings. After the All-Star break, he rebounded nicely by allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings against the Cleveland Guardians.

This week he has a matchup versus the Kansas City Royals who got even worse by trading away their All-Star outfielder, Andrew Benintendi. The Royals currently have scored the fourth-fewest runs (379) with the sixth lowest OPS (.686). Play the matchup here and be sure to start Pivetta.

Ranger Suarez (PHI) - vs Washington Nationals

Suarez is another player who has seemingly outplayed his roster percentage. Fantasy managers roster him in just 53% of leagues but the lefty has a solid 3.84 ERA this season. I'm confident Suarez can be a dependable pitcher for Fantasy Baseball.

Corey Kluber (TB) - at Detroit Tigers

Kluber hasn't been his best in the last two appearances. He allowed eight earned runs in his last 11 innings, raising his ERA to 3.91. Kluber's next game comes against the Detroit Tigers who have scored the fewest runs in MLB. Despite his recent struggles, start Kluber with confidence this week when he takes on the Tigers.

Jose Urquidy (HOU) - vs Boston Red Sox

Urquidy is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball right now. He has a streak of eight consecutive quality starts and should be able to continue that against the Boston Red Sox who rank in the bottom-10 of almost all offensive statistics since the All-Star break ended.

There were questions about Urquidy earlier in the season, but he is showing to be a must-start pitcher every week.

Carlos Rodon (SF) - at Oakland Athletics

Rodon has allowed five earned runs in both of his two previous starts. Fantasy managers, however, should not worry yet, keep Rodon in the lineup.

Lance Lynn (CHW) - vs Kansas City Royals

Lynn had a hard time after the White Sox activated him from the injured list on June 13th. He allowed more than five runs in four of his nine starts this season. His two most recent starts, however, have been much better as he allowed four runs in 11.2 innings. His next start comes against the weak Royals lineup and Fantasy managers can return to trusting Lynn in their lineups.

Cole Irvin (OAK) - at Los Angeles Angels

Irvin is in a stretch of five straight quality starts. Irvin made the stream 'ems two weeks ago and he proceeded to impress by striking out eight batters across seven innings. He allowed just three hits and one walk for one earned run. The Athletics left-hander could make the list as a stream candidate again, but his roster percentage jumped from 13% to 32% in the last two weeks. This makes him more of a start 'em caliber pitcher.

Bench 'em

Zach Plesac (CLE) - vs Houston Astros

Plesac has a measly 2-8 record on the season and it's likely to move to 2-9 after this week when he faces the Astros ace and Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander. On top of the tough matchup, Plesac hasn't been his best this month as he failed to make it past the fifth innings in three straight appearances.

Dylan Bundy (MIN) - vs Toronto Blue Jays

Bundy made the pitching planner a week ago as a Start 'em option, but disappointed Fantasy managers after allowing five earned runs against the Milwaukee Brewers. He makes it again this week but as a Bench 'em candidate as he faces another tough matchup in the Toronto Blue Jays.

Mike Minor (CIN) - at Milwaukee Brewers

Fantasy managers do not roster Minor in many leagues, but some may see him as a viable streaming option this week. However, this will be a tough game. The Brewers have the second most runs since the All-Star break ended. Leave Minor on the bench or the waivers.

Jake Odorizzi (HOU) - at Cleveland Guardians

Odorizzi makes the bench 'ems after the Oakland Athletics roughed him up in his last start. It's not the fact that it was a bad start but the fact he dealt with a blister during this game.  A blister can be a pitcher's worst nightmare as it can linger and make throwing a baseball much harder and painful.

Odorizzi is scheduled to pitch this Sunday against the Seattle Mariners. Fantasy managers should watch this closely to see if the blister is still hurting the right-hander. If it's lingering, leave him on the bench.

Chad Kuhl (COL) - at San Diego Padres

Kuhl continued his recent struggles by allowing four earned runs in the first two innings this Friday night. This marks a five-game streak of either not making it five innings or allowing at least four earned runs. Kuhl started the season on a tear but has quickly brought himself back to Fantasy irrelevance. Follow the stats and keep Kuhl on the bench.

Jakob Junis (SF) - vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Junis has made a couple of nice starts this season but will have a tough matchup when he has to face the Los Angeles Dodgers who have the second-most runs (516) and the highest OPS (.778) in MLB. Some may see Junis as a streaming option this week but leave him on the bench.

Stream 'em

Adrian Sampson (CHC) - vs Miami Marlins

Embed from Getty Images

Sampson made the Stream 'ems last week and played well enough to make it again this week. The Miami Marlins have the fourth worst OPS (.679) in MLB and Sampson has a solid chance at another good performance.

James Kaprielian (OAK) - at Los Angeles Angels

Kaprielian is putting together a stretch of solid games that has brought his ERA down to 4.50. If Kaprielian can continue stringing these performances together, he'll be a sneaky good add in most Fantasy Baseball leagues. Might as well take a chance on the former first-round pick.

Reid Detmers (LAA) - at Seattle Mariners

Detmers has been dominant in his last three outings, allowing just two earned runs in 17 innings against the Braves, Astros, and Orioles (all good teams). He has another tough matchup coming versus the Mariners but after seeing him perform this well, he's a must-start player moving forward.

Drew Smyly (CHC) - vs Miami Marlins

Smyly is the second Cubs pitcher to make the stream em's this week. He comes in with a 3% roster percentage making him a widely available streaming option. Smyly pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run versus the Philadelphia Phillies in his last start. Expect him to have a similar performance against the Marlins.

Mitch Keller (PIT) - at Baltimore Orioles

Keller currently has three straight quality starts and seems to be finding a groove. Keller is a former top-50 prospect who has yet to have much success at the big-league level. The Pirates righty might have finally figured it out. If this is the case, he will be a must-add player.

Graham Ashcraft (CIN) - at Miami Marlins

Embed from Getty Images

Ashcraft made the stream 'ems last week and he pitched a solid game. He pitched 6.2 innings against the Marlins and allowed three runs while striking out six. Ashcraft performed well enough to make the stream 'ems for another week.

Janson Junk (LAA) - vs Oakland Athletics

Rounding out the 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 16 Pitching Planner is Junk of the Los Angeles Angels. Junk is someone that Fantasy managers will rush to add after seeing his impressive outing where he struck out eight batters in five innings against the Kansas City Royals
