2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 21 Pitching Planner

Welcome to the 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 21 Pitching Planner.

The 2022 Fantasy Baseball Week 21 Pitching Planner is here to help all Fantasy Baseball managers make the tough decisions on which pitchers are deserving of making the team.

This week all 35 two-start pitchers are listed and receive a letter grade between A, B, C, D, or F. This ranking is based on the pitcher's previous statistics, and their upcoming opponent as well.

Below the two-start pitchers, an additional 34 pitchers are recommended to be Started, Benched, or Streamed. Be sure to grab those streaming options off the waiver wire this week before the opponent does it first.

Two-Start Pitchers

Here's a quick rundown of the rankings.

A: Aces, start without questioning it.

B: Reliable starter but not as dependable as the grade A's.

C: Middle-of-the-pack players. Usually, provide decent Fantasy value and can be started.

D: Risky streamers, not trustworthy, but Fantasy managers can start them if necessary.

F: Leave on the waiver wire, unlikely to provide any Fantasy production.

Start 'em

Lucas Giolito (CHW) - at Oakland Athletics

Over the past three seasons, Giolito turned himself into a must-start pitcher, but things have changed this season. Giolito has a 5.27 ERA mostly due in part to allowing 1.55 home runs per nine innings. His poor year thus far has made it tough for Fantasy managers to start him every day, but he needs to be in the lineup against the Oakland Athletics.

The Athletics have been one of the worst offenses all season and are tied with the third-fewest home runs.

Zac Gallen (ARI) - at Colorado Rockies

Normally it would not be a question of whether to start Gallen or not, but anytime a pitcher has to play in Coors Field it's worth asking. Gallen has played the Rockies at Coors twice this season and has pitched two quality starts. This is reason enough to keep him in the lineup.

Cristian Javier (HOU) - vs Texas Rangers

The Astros moved Javier into the bullpen, but he wasn't there long. He made just one relief appearance before the Astros placed Justin Verlander on the injured list. This move prompted Javier to return to the starting rotation. Javier has been excellent all season and he deserves to start.

St. Louis Cardinals Rotation

Everybody in the St. Louis Cardinals rotation should be started this week due to their overall reliability and matchups. Jack Flaherty, Jose Quintana, Jordan Montgomery, and Adam Wainwright get to face off against the Washington Nationals. Then Miles Mikolas, Flaherty, and Quintana will finish the week against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Both the Nationals and Pirates are in the bottom-five teams for runs scored over the last 15 days and the season as a whole.

Flaherty is coming off the injured list this week, but these matchups are easy enough that he has a good chance of performing well. Quintana has struggled a bit in his last three starts. In this stretch, he pitched just 12.1 innings while allowing six earned runs and striking out just four batters. Despite his struggles, he is still a start this week.

Carlos Carrasco (NYM) - at Miami Marlins

Carrasco is set to return from the injured list on Sunday, September 4th against the Washington Nationals. His next start will then come against the Miami Marlins. The Marlins have scored the second-fewest runs and recorded the lowest OPS (.539) over the last 15 days.

Philadelphia Phillies Rotations

The Phillies come into this week with an easy set of matchups against the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals. as mentioned above, both of these teams are in the bottom-five offenses in the last 15 days and the season.

Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, and Kyle Gibson will face off against the Marlins. Noah Syndergaard, Ranger Suarez, and Nola will face the Nationals. Wheeler will be making his first start since the Phillies placed him on the injured list Thursday, August 25.

Tyler Mahle (MIN) - at New York Yankees

Mahle is set to return from the injured list on Saturday, September 3 against the Chicago White Sox. He will then face the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. This is a tough matchup for anybody, but Mahle will be up for the task. Upon his return from the injured list, he should be placed right into the starting lineup in every Fantasy Baseball league.

Trevor Rogers (MIA) - at Philadelphia Phillies

Rogers returned from the injured list on Wednesday, August 31 and he impressed by having his best start of the season. He pitched six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays allowing five hits and one walk for one earned run while striking out five batters.

This start is good enough to keep Rogers in the lineup for the time being despite his tough matchup this week.

Ross Stripling (TOR) - at Texas Rangers

Stripling has three straight quality starts and has provided excellent value in this span. Fantasy managers should start Stripling and ride the wave this week.

Brady Singer (KC) - vs Detroit Tigers

Singer is another pitcher gaining steam down the stretch, helping Fantasy managers make the playoff push. He also gets to play the Detroit Tigers this week which is a great matchup for any pitcher.

The Chicago White Sox roughed up Singer in his last start, but this shouldn't make Fantasy managers worry as he's been dominant for most of the last two months.

Bench 'em

Zach Davies (ARI) - at San Diego Padres

Davies has pitched well recently but that is likely to come to an end when he faces the San Diego Padres this week. The last time Davies pitched against the Padres came on June 20, and he allowed four earned runs across six innings while striking out just three batters.

Davies is likely to have a repeat of this performance and should be left on the bench.

Madison Bumgarner (ARI) - at Colorado Rockies

Bumgarner has allowed four or more earned runs in six straight contests and it's likely to continue as he faces the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field this week. Leave Bumgarner on the bench.

German Marquez (COL) - vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Marquez is coming off an impressive start against the New York Mets. In that start, he allowed just one hit and two walks in seven shutout innings. Despite this solid showing Fantasy managers should keep Marquez on the bench.

The Diamondbacks have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last 15 days and will prove to be trouble, especially when playing at Coors Field.

Sean Manaea (SD) - vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Manaea made the pitching planner last week as a bench recommendation and he's back for the same reason, he's facing the Dodgers. The Dodgers have hurt Manaea more than once this season and it's safe to expect it to happen again.

Ken Waldichuk (OAK) - vs Atlanta Braves

Waldichuk made his MLB debut on September 1 and had a solid outing. This, however, came against the Washington Nationals. This week he's slated to face the Atlanta Braves who have one of the best offenses in baseball. While Waldichuk is receiving well-deserved respect for his debut, this start will be much tougher and Fantasy managers should keep him on the bench.

Dylan Bundy (MIN) - vs Cleveland Guardians

Bundy has failed to make it into the sixth inning in his last 11 starts. I don't expect this streak to end anytime soon and for that reason, Bundy remains on the bench.

Eric Lauer (MIL) - at Colorado Rockies

Lauer draws the unlucky card of having to face the Rockies on their home turf. The Rockies have scored the most runs and have the best OPS (.803) when playing at home.

Lauer has been a solid pitcher all season long but this week he can be kept on the bench.

Baltimore Orioles Rotation

The Orioles rotation has been on fire recently, but all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately, it could be this week. The Orioles have a tough schedule as they face the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.

Jordan Lyles, Kyle Bradish, and Dean Kremer will go against the Blue Jays. Austin Voth, Spenser Watkins, and Lyles will face the Red Sox. The Orioles have the fifth-best ERA (2.54) and ninth-best WHIP (1.17) over the last 15 days. This is due in large part to this starting rotation.

While Fantasy managers are rushing to add these players to their rosters, it might be best to keep them on the bench this week when facing these tough divisional opponents.

Stream 'em

Jose Suarez (LAA) - vs Detroit Tigers

Embed from Getty Images

Suarez has pitched extremely well in his last six starts and now draws a favorable start against the Detroit Tigers. In his last six starts, Suarez has a 2.12 ERA, allowed just 0.53 home runs per nine innings, and averaged four strikeouts per walk.

Suarez is gaining steam down the stretch and pushing Fantasy managers into the playoffs.

Michael Pineda (DET) - at Kansas City Royals

Statistically, Pineda is having the worst season of his career, but there's still value here. Pineda is facing the Royals this week. Strikeouts have been Pineda's weakness this season, but he may find some success here as the Royals are tied with the eighth-most strikeouts in the last fifteen days.

Pineda is far from a sure thing, but if you're in desperate need of a streamer, he could provide some value.

Rich Hill (BOS) - at Tampa Bay Rays

Embed from Getty Images

Hill is coming off a poor start against the Texas Rangers, but he has a chance of bouncing back this week. Hill will get to face the Tampa Bay Rays who he lit up for 11 strikeouts in seven shutout innings on August 27.

The veteran hurler may not have the same dominant performance this week, but he certainly has a chance of getting close.

Jonathan Heasley (KC) - vs Detroit Tigers

The Royals righty is coming off a start where he allowed three runs in five innings while striking out seven batters against the San Diego Padres. The only damage came on two home runs from the Padres but otherwise, it was a great start from Heasley.

Heading into his matchup versus the Tigers he will be less prone to allow the home run ball as the Tigers have the fewest home runs in baseball. They are the only team with less than 100 home runs on the season, coming in at a lowly 76 homers.

On top of that, the Tigers have the seventh most strikeouts this season and Heasley could easily get seven or more again this week.
