2022 NFL Mock Draft: Top 20 Picks

The Super Bowl is set and we have an updated 2022 NFL Mock Draft!

As we enter Week 13 in the NFL, the top of the 2022 NFL Draft order is starting to take shape. We are using Tankathon to determine our mock draft order. The last time we published a 2022 NFL Mock Draft we shared our top 15 picks. This time we bumped it up to the top 20 picks.

We are still firm believers that the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans will pass on selecting a quarterback with the first two picks in the draft.

You could argue that the Detroit Lions need a Franchise QB and that Jared Goff is just a bridge. But that team is so far from being ready to compete and this quarterback class does not appear to feature "that guy."

What will the Houston Texans do with Deshaun Watson this offseason? We imagine they are more likely to target the 2023 QB draft class instead of this current group of kids.

With all of that being said, someone is going to draft a quarterback in the top 20 picks of the 2022 NFL Draft, but we don't have a clear enough picture yet to tie Matt Corral (Ole Miss), Sam Howell (North Carolina), Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh) or Malik Willis (Liberty) to an NFL franchise just yet.

Teams that we are mocking for the first time in this update - Panthers, Saints, Browns, Steelers, Raiders and Chargers

The Miami Dolphins own the San Francisco 49ers pick (Trey Lance trade), which is now outside the top 20. The Dolphins pick (#9) belongs to the Philadelphia Eagles (Jaylen Waddle trade).

2022 NFL Mock Draft: Top 20 Picks

Before I dive into either prospect I’ll say that both of them have proven they’re worthy of the first overall pick. It’s just going to be up to the Detroit Lions on which player they ultimately prefer.

Kayvon Thibodeaux has long been the favorite to go with the first overall pick. He lends a great skill set with a blend of speed and power. And even though he’s an elite prospect he’s still raw in some regards. But if he’s groomed properly he can reach scary heights as a cornerstone of a very lucky defense. He’s the prototypical speed rusher of the future.

Aidan Hutchinson is also a mix of speed and power but leans more so towards a power element. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count how many times he’s taken on multiple offensive linemen and won. This guy eats double teams and rarely loses in a one-on-one pass rush. He’s the prototypical edge rusher of old that’s still viable in today’s NFL.

Comparing these two is very interesting because really they’re two different sides of the same coin. Both have a blend of speed and power, while each leans toward one more than the other while still being in the top tier on the edge in this draft.

When it comes to team fit I tend to believe that the Lions will target Hutchinson over Thibodeaux, should Dan Campbell and company remain at the helm. He fits that brute, alpha, gritty mentality and personality a touch better than Thibodeaux.

Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave keep jockeying back and forth for who should be the top WR in the draft. Wilson right now may have the upper leg with three straight 100-yard receiving games with six touchdowns!

Olave has the talent to be the first WR off of the board. He is not the biggest WR, standing at 6`1, but he has the wheels to be a legit deep threat at the next level. He is also an excellent route runner who is a threat anywhere on the field.

Drake London (USC) was going to compete with Olave as the top WR in this draft class, before suffering an ankle fracture on Saturday. His season comes to an end with 88 catches, 1,084 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Treylon Burks (Arkansas) and Jameson Williams (Alabama) are other wide receivers to keep your eyes on leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft.

There are numerous teams who could be in the market for a quarterback come draft time, but with no clear-cut QB1, quarterbacks may fall. Yes, both Detroit and Houston need QBs, but teams like the Denver Broncos and Washington Football Team later in the first round are more likely to take the first QB off the board, assuming no other teams trade up.

The risk is not as high when you draft a QB at 19 (Washington) instead of at the top. Guys like Matt Corral, Sam Howell, Kenny Pickett and Malik Willis could all be in play in the mid-first. This could be the year that teams trade back into the back end of the first to acquire a QB.

The combine will go a long way in determining which quarterback goes first.
