2022 PGA Championship: Favorites to Fade

2022 PGA Championship: Favorites to Fade

While trying to piece together a few 2022 PGA Championship: Favorites to Fade, I struggled to come up with true favorites who I didn't like this week. Honestly, that shouldn't come as a surprise. More often than not, the Vegas betting favorites are tough to beat in majors because the top guys on the PGA Tour bring their A-games in big tournaments.

This week will likely be no different, but I'm going to try to find a couple of guys for everyone to avoid.

The second major of the season will be taking place at Southern Hills CC. Southern Hills last hosted in 2007 when Tiger Woods hoisted The Wanamaker Trophy.

This golf course is long and demanding. It measures a whopping 7,556 yards with only two par 5's. Both of those holes will play over 630 yards.

It will also feature multiple par 4's that are playing over 450 yards and only one par 3 playing under 220 yards. Simply put, Southern Hills CC will be a very demanding test this week.

Scottie Scheffler - +1200 (DraftKings)

Just like in the Masters Tournament, I'm fading Scottie Scheffler this week. This is also probably stupid, like it was in the year's first major, in which he won.

Here's the thing; nothing we have seen from Scheffler this year says to fade him; ever. However, he has to eventually have an off week. Right?

With this course setup, maintaining with the rest of the field on the longer par 4's and par 3's and then capitalizing on some of the easier holes will be the recipe for a win. Scheffler has been excellent this season in par 4 efficiency from 450 to 500 yards. He ranks 24th on tour coming into this week with a stroke average of 4.026.

However, his par 3 efficiency from 200 to 225 yards is simply average. He ranks T79th with a stroke average of 3.079.

The last item I'm looking at with Scheffler is his mediocre scrambling statistic. There are going to be plenty of missed greens with a lot of long iron shots, scrambling success around the greens will be vital to a good week. Scheffler ranks just 123rd on the PGA Tour in scrambling.

Fade Scheffler at your own peril because he's already proven me wrong once this year.

Viktor Hovland - +1800 (DraftKings)

I'm not a believer in Viktor Hovland this week, even though I am almost every other week. His game is silky smooth and he is an elite ball striker. I'm basing this decision to fade Hovland solely on his short game. Although he has a solid 68th ranking in scrambling, he is the worst player on tour in SG: Around the green. Hovland ranks 210th out of a possible 210.

I don't think GIR percentage will be quite as high this week as it is normally and I can see Hovland losing quite a bit of shots around the greens, as he normally does.

Hovland is yet to miss a cut in a major in his young career, but he also has yet to finish in the top 10. I see those two streaks continuing this week as I see Hovland making the cut but I don't see him competing for his first major.
