Players to Consider/Drop For Your Squad(s)

The real season, aka the postseason, has begun for most if not all of us. If you're finding yourself at the big dance, congrats on your successes. Those accolades mean nothing now no matter what your record is coming in though. This is for all the marbles, savvy utilization of the wire can make or break a championship ascension. While we chase glory, let's look at my 2023-24 Fantasy Hockey Week 24 Waiver Wire plays.

Maximizing starts regardless of position is of the utmost importance in do-or-die matchups. Therefore, you should be looking at the teams playing four times. Have this in the back of your mind anytime you're milling options. Set your roster for every day of the match and find the free position slots available in order to determine what player(s) will actually be able to start the most.

A third of the league will play four times. However, no squad plays less than three times, sparing you from tough cuts for now. The Washington Capitals are the premier team to stream with three of their four games falling on off nights.

I want to reiterate that my drop considerations are for redraft leagues. Additionally, I never consider plus/minus. Do yourself a favor and make your commissioner scrap the asinine category.

T.J. Oshie, RW, Washington Capitals (11% rostered)

Hard for me to believe T.J. Sochi (see shootout 2014 Sochi Olympics) is 37 years old. With the favorable schedule this week, you're looking for the former St. Louis Blue to turn back the clock with Washington fighting for their playoff lives. Playing top line and PP1, the greybeard will be counted on for production as the regular season winds down.

Shane Pinto, C, Ottawa Senators (25% rostered)

With Josh Norris done for the season, the way has been paved to play top-line minutes, as well as PP2 minutes. Very productive since his return from suspension, with 19 points in 24 games played, the pivot is making the most of his half-season. A strong contributor in SOG averaging three per game, ownership should be much higher.

Casey DeSmith, G, Vancouver Canucks (23% rostered)

These types of opportunities win championships. Manning the crease on one of the top teams is surely worth a look if you have room to add in net. He should be the starter for at least another week if not more before Thatcher Demko returns. Vancouver plays Buffalo, Montreal, and Calgary, making for a strong chance to collect some wins.

Cameron York, D, Philadelphia Flyers (11% rostered)

Just like in real life, you can never have enough quality defenders on your roster. The rearguard has been locked into top pair duty with Travis Sanheim for some time now, producing 9 points over the past 10 games. He's also anchoring the top powerplay. The former 2019 first-round pick looks like he's taking another step late in the campaign.

Drops

Alex Lyon, G, Detroit Red Wings

The Motor City franchise is in a freefall since late February. Abort ship on their net unless they can right their course.

Gabriel Vilardi, C/RW, Winnipeg Jets

Tyler Toffoli's arrival endangers his prime deployment if he even returns from an enlarged spleen. Although a talented player, he's quickly becoming a band-aid boy you should avoid during these crucial times.

Joseph Woll, G, Toronto Maple Leafs

Goalies younger than 25 rarely, if ever, step into an NHL crease and consistently play well. Ilya Samsonov is the better-performing part of this timeshare currently. Stream if anything when a start is confirmed but do not roster permanently.
