2023-24 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Weekly Planner

Teams are starting to get into the rhythm of the season once again, and we are getting an early look at what some teams will be. Some of it good, and some of it bad. And we'll try to hit much of it in the 2023-24 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Weekly Planner!

Early season ponderings include the Flyers' shocking 3-1 record to start the year. Or are you trying to figure out how preseason darlings like the Oilers and Sabres have won just one game so far?

Is Ovechkin's slow start adding doubt to catching Gretzky's record? Are the Knights and Avs on a collision course for the Western Conference Finals following their red-hot starts?

I may not have the answers for you, but I do have the 2023-24 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Weekly Planner so let's dive in!

2023-24 Fantasy Hockey Week 3 Weekly Planner

October 21, 2023 - October 27, 2023

Top Targets

Jake Sanderson, Defense, Ottawa Senators (65% Rostered)

The Ottawa Senators have gotten off to a hot start this season, and the play of Jake Sanderson is helping with their success.

The 21-year-old played a big role on the team last year as a rookie and was expected to take another step during this season. Well, I'd like to think that two goals and three assists through four games aid the idea of this "next step". With the early success, Sanderson is on the team's second defensive pairing and has moved on to the team's top powerplay unit.

With a few favorable matches against coming up (DET, BUF, @NYI), expect to see Sanderson trending in the right direction of becoming a top fantasy defenseman in the league.

Chandler Stephenson, Center, Vegas Golden Knights (56% Rostered)

Stanley Cup hangovers are certainly a real thing that hit just about every team following their long offseason of partying. That is unless you are on the Vegas Golden Knights. Chandler Stephenson is a major reason for the team's early success.

Off to a team-leading six points (two points and four assists) through five games, Stephenson is in a prime position to continue this pace throughout the season.

He is centering the team's second line with Paul Cotter and Mark Stone on his wings, while also factoring into the top powerplay unit. Given the star power on the powerplay, look for the 29-year-old to continue his strong offensive input making him extremely valuable in fantasy.

Seth Jarvis, Center/Right Wing, Carolina Hurricanes (50% Rostered)

Following two straight 40 point-seasons, the Carolina Hurricanes are expecting a large jump in production from 21-year-old Seth Jarvis. Through the first six games, you can say he is on pace to do just that.

Jarvis started the season on the second line, while also getting time on the team's top powerplay. He has factored into the offense with four goals and two assists, while also adding 16 shots on goal. The fantasy value for Jarvis continues to rise, especially given the absence of Sebastian Aho.

The Hurricanes have four games in the upcoming week (@COL, @TBL, SEA, SJS) with most games coming against lesser opposition. Look for Jarvis to continue his hot start and find the scoresheet multiple times during Week 3.

Adam Ruzicka, Center, Calgary Flames (5% Rostered)

Two weeks ago, Adam Ruzicka began the 2023-24 season as the Flames' fourth-line center. Today, he is on the team's second line alongside Nazem Kadri and Dillon Dube. Early season success for the 24-year-old should have you keeping an eye on Ruzicka, who is playing to make sure he is an everyday player moving forward.

The third full season for Ruzicka has begun with four points (two goals and two assists) through the first four games, with the two assists coming on the powerplay. It is unsure if he will stick on the second line for the foreseeable future, but instant chemistry with Kadri and Dube is certainly helping his case.

It might still be early to commit to Adam Ruzicka for fantasy purposes, but be sure that you are keeping an eye on him. If he remains on the second line while also getting first powerplay unit minutes, there's no reason why you shouldn't get the kid on your team.

Injury Alerts

Sebastian Aho, Center/Left Wing, Carolina Hurricanes

Something major to monitor throughout the next week is the status of Sebastian Aho, who has now missed two straight games with an upper-body injury. It wasn't clear when Aho sustained the injury, as he was coming off of a Sunday game with almost 22 minutes of action.

Carolina will hope to get their top player back in action as soon as possible, but the lack of details surrounding the injury is surely causing some concern.

Gabriel Vilardi, Center/Right Wing, Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets made a major trade this offseason, but will already be without a key asset that was received.

Gabe Vilardi was injured on Tuesday following a hit from one of his former Los Angeles Kings teammates. Further diagnosis of the injury showed that Vilardi sprained his MCL, and is expected to miss roughly four to six weeks with the injury.

The 24-year-old has since been placed on the injured reserve list.

Kirby Dach, Center, Montreal Canadiens

Following a big hit last Saturday, it was announced that Kirby Dach will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right ACL and MCL. This injury comes following a big hit last Saturday which sent Dach into the Blackhawks bench.

It is an unfortunate break for the 22-year-old, who was a strong candidate for a breakout season in 2023-24. He had started the year strong with two assists in the first two games of the season.

Team Worth Watching This Week

Minnesota Wild

The first four games of 2023-24 have been interesting for Minnesota Wild fans. You've seen your team go 2-2, and allow 16 goals while registering 14 goals of their own. Thankfully, Week 3 features a number of favorable matchups for the team that can hopefully turn the momentum of the season early!

Kicking off Week 3, the Wild will play two home games against the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Edmonton Oilers. The Jackets came into this season with expectations that they'd be at the bottom of the league, and their play supports those expectations. The Oilers came into the season with the fourth-best odds of bringing home the cup, but have started the year as one of the league's worst. Expect the Wild to take advantage of both of these teams on the powerplay, as the two teams have penalty-killing units near the bottom of the league.

Later in the week, Minnesota takes to the road for meetings with the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals. The Flyers have been a pleasant surprise to start the season, while the Caps are struggling to get off the ground. I'm not sure the hot start will be sustainable for Philly, and their Week 3 opponents (@DAL, @VGK, MIN) will test that.

It may not be the start of the season that the top players were looking for, but this week sure looks like a good one to turn things in the right direction.
