Another week is in the books and we now are starting to understand more about our teams. Do we believe this could be our year or are we left wondering what went wrong during the draft?

Maybe we have avoided the injury bug and are looking good through the first couple of weeks, but if you were impacted by the slew of shortstops who have landed on the injured list, Tim shares his thoughts on how to best handle the SS position.

Now it is time to set your lineups with the help of the 2023 Fantasy Baseball Hitting Planner for 4/17 - 4/23.

Team to Target

Baltimore Orioles

America's Team. Maybe the most fun team in the league, the Baltimore Orioles are looking to take a step forward in 2023. I am skeptical that they can sneak into a playoff spot but I do think they will excite crowds on the offensive end. Especially over the next week.

They will travel over to the Nation's capital for a series with the Washington Nationals. A team deep into a rebuild is facing some growing pains with their pitching that comes in with a 4.78 SIERA, 4.94 ERA, 5.27 FIP, and 4.94 xFIP. The young staff combined with a disastrous bullpen is a recipe for success for an opposing offense. I like the young Orioles to take advantage and get hot.

I then like for them to carry that over into their next series with the Detroit Tigers. It has been rough in Detroit and it does not look like it will get any better anytime soon. Although it is early in the season, a team ERA of 6.73 combined with a 5.21 SIERA 6.32 FIP & 5.67 xFIP is cause for concern. It is the reason for the Orioles lineup to be excited. It might be a fun week in Birdland.

Go check in on guys like Austin Hays and Adam Frazier and see if you can pick them up!

Team to Avoid

I am going out on a limb here seeing as the Blue Jays have been one of the best teams early in the season. They are 8-4 and their 121 wRC+ ranks third in baseball early in the season. As a team, they are hitting .289/.349/.441 with a .346 wOBA. A great start for the Blue Jays, who are thinking they could be playing well into October.

Well, they have a couple of October-level tests here in April. They begin the week with three games in Houston against the Astros. While the Astros have started slowly, they are still the reigning champs and are expected to be around once again at the end. They currently have the sixth-best team ERA of 3.75 which is supported by an 89 ERA- (100 is average and anything below is better),  3.98 SIERA, 4.11 FIP, 4.12 xFIP. Maybe a little regression is incoming but it is not far off. They are projected to start Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy, and Luis Garcia during the series.

It doesn't get any easier as they will travel to the Bronx for a divisional matchup with the New York Yankees. The Yankees rank third in baseball with a 2.72 ERA (62 ERA-). The 3.83 SIERA, 3.41 FIP and 3.85 xFIP suggest regression but also show that this staff has been elite early. Their projected starters appear to be Domingo German, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt, which is not the worst draw. German and Schmidt have not been great but the bullpen has been elite early.

I still like the Blue Jays to score but the fringe guys on the roster might face a tougher matchup and thus might not need to start. This might be a good week to bench Alejandro Kirk and Whit Merrifield.
