Team to Target

Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians offense is currently struggling. They are hitting just .231/.319/.347 and only have 10 total home runs with a .296 wOBA and 87 wRC+. A bottom-tier offense that hampered them in the 2022 postseason is hurting them to start the 2023 season. If there was ever a week to get going though, it will be this one.

They begin the week with three at home against the Colorado Rockies. While they will not travel to Coors Field, it does not currently matter. That is because the Rockies as a team have a 5.57 ERA,  5.03 FIP, & 4.76 xFIP, which ranks 29th in baseball only behind the Oakland Athletics. The Rockies projected starters are Austin Gomber (12.12 ERA), Ryan Feltner (6.16 ERA), and Noah Davis, who would be making his second career start.

After the Rockies, the Guardians will then head to Boston for a three-game set with the Red Sox. Sure, it does not get much worse than the Rockies but it does not really get much better with the Red Sox current staff. Overall, they have a 5.19 ERA, 4.75 FIP, and 4.36 xFIP, however, it has been weighed down by the poor starting pitching. Ranking in at 28th in the majors, Boston's starters have a 6.56 ERA, 5.70 FIP, and 4.13 xFIP on the season. They are projected to start Garrett Whitlock (4.50 ERA), Brayan Bello (5 runs in 2.2 innings), and Chris Sale (8.00 ERA).

It is always hard to gauge early season numbers, but maybe we can finally get Josh Bell on track this week.

Team to Avoid

Philadelphia Phillies

Are the Phillies suffering from a World Series appearance hangover or do they just miss Bryce Harper? Maybe a bit of both, and while I think this team will eventually wake up, I do think it might be another week. Their offense has been fine, as it has mostly been the pitching holding them back, but a tough week for the offense could be ahead.

They start the week with the Seattle Mariners who have gotten off to a sluggish start but not necessarily because of their pitching staff. They currently sport a 3.64 ERA, 3.57 FIP, and 4.09 xFIP. The Phillies will avoid Luis Castillo it appears, but they will have to face Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, and George Kirby.

The week does not get any easier for the Phillies as they stay within the AL West as they take on the defending champion Houston Astros in a World Series rematch.  The Astros currently have a 3.36 ERA, 3.92 FIP, and 4.01 xFIP and do not look like they miss Justin Verlander too much. The Astros will throw some of their top guys as they are projected to start Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier, and Jose Urquidy.
