Team to Target

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have gotten off to a slow start this season. This coming off an offseason where everyone touted them as having a chance to make a deep postseason run due to an elite offense. Unfortunately, a 99 wRC+ is not where the team envisioned being over a month into the season.

This week, they'll get a pair of solid matchups to try and right the ship. They begin the week by hosting the Kansas City Royals. The Royals currently have a team ERA of 5.45 ERA, 4.77 FIP, & 4.60 xFIP, the third-worst staff in baseball. Their projected starters are Brad Keller (4.31 ERA) Brady Singer (8.82 ERA) and Daniel Lynch is projected to make his first start of the season coming off the IL.

Up next, they take on the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox staff comes in as the 5th worst staff with a 4.89 ERA, 4.57 FIP, & 4.35 xFIP. Boston can score but they give up plenty of runs, good for Fantasy Baseball. Fangraphs projects the Red Sox to throw James Paxton who will be making his second start back from injury, Chris Sale (6.37 ERA) who is trying to get back to form after so many years, and Corey Kluber (6.29 ERA) who is just not the same pitcher he was years earlier.

Team to Avoid

New York Mets

The New York Mets have hit a slump in recent weeks. They sit at 18-20 and are 3-7 in their last 10 games. It is not the same team that had a great 2022 season and finished with 101 wins. While it is still early, and this roster is mostly the same and should bounce back, it might be a good idea to avoid them until they get going.

Especially with a tough week ahead. They will start the week by finishing a 4 game series with the Nationals on Monday where Patrick Corbin (4.87 ERA) will pitch. Afterward, they will take on the Tampa Bay Rays who have been the best team in baseball. They lead MLB with a team ERA of 2.95 ERA. It is an odd projection from Fangraphs, as the only starter projected is Drew Rasmussen (3.11 ERA). The other two games have long relievers starting on Fangraphs, signifying a bullpen game. The Rays bullpen has a 3.01 ERA and they can get 0s from anyone, including Chase Anderson who they pulled out of thin air to throw 5 scoreless innings for them.

Finally, the week will end with the Cleveland Guardians. While the Guardians have the worst offense in baseball, the pitching is always good in Cleveland. They currently have a top-10 pitching staff with a 3.72 ERA, which is something we are used to seeing from Cleveland. The Mets will draw Cal Quantrill (3.89 ERA), Tanner Bibbee (4.30 ERA in 3 starts), the Guardians' number 4 prospect, and Shane Bieber (2.61 ERA) the Ace.
