Team to Target

Houston Astros

The defending World Champions have woken up after a slow start. They are now 26-19, 9-1 over their last 10, and within two games of the division lead. Here comes the Houston Astros.

We never really thought they would struggle all year, but they have started to look like the well-oiled machine that mowed through the 2022 playoffs. The week starts with the Milwaukee Brewers, who on paper, are really good and known for good pitching. However, in May, Milwaukee has the 6th worst ERA sitting at 4.96. This is supported by poor metrics such as a 5.39 FIP & 4.74 xFIP.

The Brewers will send out Corbin Burnes, but he has not been his normal elite self thus far with a 3.48 ERA. He will be followed by Collin Rea (5.52 ERA) & Adrian Houser (3.07 ERA). The bullpen has been an issue this month with a 5.69 ERA, 5.70 FIP, & 4.66 xFIP.

Finally, the Astros will head to Oakland for the worst team in baseball. They have the worst roster in baseball and it has been a rough May (season), with a pitching staff sporting a 6.00 ERA, 5.87 FIP, & 5.41 xFIP. The projected starters are James Kaprielian (10.17 ERA), Kyle Muller (7.71 ERA), & Luis Medina (6.88 ERA). It is unfortunate for Athletic fans because while teams have always tanked, the Athletics are not even trying this year. They are essentially sporting a roster full of guys that should be in AAA and will face arguably the class of the league this week with the Astros.

Team to Avoid

The Toronto Blue Jays are a very good baseball team, however, I do think they could face a tough week.

It will start with the best team in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays currently have the best pitching staff in baseball so far, with a league-leading 3.31 ERA. Over the four-game series, the Rays will send out Josh Fleming (3.68 ERA), Taj Bradley (3.54 ERA), Shane McClanahan (2.05 ERA), & Zach Eflin (3.38 ERA). Of course, when facing the Rays, a team will always have to prepare for that elite bullpen as well.

Up next, they will end the week facing the Minnesota Twins. The Twins, have the second-best ERA in May with a 3.36 team ERA. The projected starters are Louie Varland (4.30 ERA), Pablo Lopez (4.00 ERA), and Bailey Ober (1.70 ERA), but as mentioned they are pitching much better in May as a staff. The Twins starters have had a 2.92 ERA throughout May, and providing great length, shortening the game for the bullpens. Toronto has a great offense, but they are running into some hot pitching staff this week.
