Team to Target
Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves have been impressive offensively in the Month of May, hitting .258/.328/.474 with a .344 wOBA & 114 wRC+. This includes the second most Home Runs currently hit in May with 42.
They get a treat as they take on the Oakland Athletics to start the week, the team that is actively not trying this season. Oakland has a team ERA of 6.88 with a 5.98 FIP & 5.56 xFIP. Fangraphs projects Paul Blackburn to return for his season debut on Monday and he will be followed by Luis Medina (6.45 ERA) & Ken Waldichuk (7.40 ERA). The Braves have championship aspirations. The Athletics are dreaming of Vegas. On paper, it should be good for the Braves offense.
Atlanta will stay out West and take on the Diamondbacks. The Snakes as a team sport a 4.51 ERA, 4.47 FIP, & 4.41 xFIP. However, the Braves are projected to see both Merrill Kelly (2.98 ERA) & Zac Gallen (2.97 ERA) as well as Ryne Nelson (5.02 ERA). That would be the best the Diamondbacks can send against the Braves, but the issue becomes when the bullpen door swings open. The Diamondbacks bullpen is in the bottom third of baseball with a 4.40 ERA, 4.50 FIP, & 4.19 xFIP.
Team to Avoid
Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins' offense has been middle of the pack so far in May. They are hitting .221/.309/.398 with a .310 wOBA & 98 wRC+. It is not horrible by any means, but it certainly is not what we are looking for from an offense.
It does not help that the Houston Astros are on their schedule. The Astros have been the second-best pitching staff in May with a 3.25 ERA, 3.75 FIP, & 3.53 xFIP. It appears they are lined up to throw J.P France (3.43 ERA), Brandon Bielak (3.55 ERA), & Hunter Brown (3.20 ERA). While the Twins do avoid Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier, they will not avoid the Astros bullpen which is arguably the best in the business.
The week ends with four against the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland sports the 7th best ERA in the month of April sitting at a 3.60 ERA. The projected starters are Shane Bieber (3.08 ERA), Tanner Bibee (3.18 ERA), Aaron Civale (returning from injury), and Logan Allen (3.31 ERA). Of course, Cleveland also sports a solid bullpen that can give opposing hitters trouble.
