2023 Fantasy baseball Hitting Planner 5/8 - 5/14

Welcome to the 2023 Fantasy Baseball Hitting Planner for 5/8 - 5/14.

We are now over a month into the season and teams are starting to build identities. The Tampa Bay Rays are proving that the early stretch against the weak competition was no fluke. The Pittsburgh Pirates are the best current story in baseball. Surprisingly, both the Chicago White Sox and the St Louis Cardinals are extremely disappointing.

The same can be said for our Fantasy Baseball teams. We are seeing the contenders separate from the pack and the rest start to scramble to figure out how to save their season. There is plenty of time to bounce back and we are happy to help with that over at Fantasy Six Pack.

Now it is time to set your lineups with the help of the 2023 Fantasy Baseball Hitting Planner for 5/8 - 5/14.

Team to Target

A little bit of foreshadowing in the intro because the Pittsburgh Pirates have been the most fun team in baseball to start the 2023 campaign. I think next week will continue that trend and hopefully, it will continue down the road.

The Pirates will begin the week with three against the Colorado Rockies who are struggling with pitching. Overall, they have a 5.14 ERA, 4.89 FIP, and 4.76 xFIP on the season. It is tough to pitch in Coors Field, but the Rockies are struggling to pitch wherever they go. They are projected to start Kyle Freeland who has been their best pitcher with a 3.76 ERA but the peripherals sit at a 4.17 xERA, 5.00 FIP, & 4.72 xFIP. Connor Seabold will follow with his ERA of 5.27 and Antonio Senzatela is scheduled for his second start on the season.

The Pirates then travel to Baltimore to face another fun team, the Orioles. While the Orioles have a fun young offense, the pitching is still a bit behind, as their ERA sits at 4.39, which is not awful, but does sit slightly below average across the league. The projected starters for that series are Kyle Bradish (6.14 ERA), Tyler Wells (3.34 ERA), and Kyle Gibson (4.61 ERA). I really hope this is a fun series but am worried the Orioles pitching might catch up with them at some point.

Team to Avoid

The Angels are in such a weird position as a franchise. They keep trying to figure it out and be competitive, but it might end with them having to trade Shohei Ohtani at the deadline. I think it could be a rough week of tough pitching as well.

They start the week with their division rival the Houston Astros. The Astros are second in baseball with a 3.23 team ERA which includes a 3.82 FIP & 3.88 xFIP. Fangraphs projections have both Framber Valdez (2.60 ERA) and Cristian Javier (3.48 ERA) to start during the series, but there is a question of who will start the middle game due to an injury. The current projection has J.P. France making his pitching debut. The Astros also have one of the best bullpen in baseball that the Angels will have to navigate.

Following that series, the Angels head to Cleveland, which has been a pitching factory for years. This year, the Guardians have 3.95 ERA which ranks them in the top third of the league. The Guardians project to have both Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee who both sport 2.45 ERA. Cal Quantril is scheduled to start with a 4.73 ERA, but as was the case with the Astros, the Guardians have one of the better bullpens in baseball.
