2023 Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire

by Dylan Clemons

Hello Fantasy nerds! NFL Week 4 has wrapped up, which means it is to discuss the 2023 Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire!

What a wild ride Week 4 was. We had some tough injuries that went down including Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals fracturing a rib and their offense looking abysmal again. The tight end position also became thinner with Pat Freiermuth going down with a hamstring injury. We also had Javonte Williams go down with a hip injury as well and could miss some time.

There is a ton happening around the league. I will be here every week helping to decipher what players are one-week surprises and which players can add value to your squad moving forward.

In this article, we will be targeting players on the waiver wire who are under 50% owned on the FantasyPros consensus roster percentage.

At this point in the season, we are starting to get larger sample times, so it can make it hard to find that waiver wire darling. I am here to help with that. Now let's jump into the 2023 Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire!

Top Waiver Adds

Tyler Boyd, WR, Cincinnati Bengals (40.1% Rostered)

I was surprised when I saw that Tyler Boyd was available in almost 60% of the leagues. But Tee Higgins suffered a fractured ribs during the Week 4 loss. We have seen Tyler Boyd produce when he has the chance, and I have a feeling that he is about to eat again.

Even with Higgins on the field, Boyd has seen 24 targets over his last three games. The issue is, he isn't doing much after the catch because he hasn't had more than 52 receiving yards in any game this season. That is the downside of Tyler Boyd is that he has never been a big play guy.

The Bengals have a matchup with the Arizona Cardinals this and have only allowed one touchdown to the wide receiver position this year. However, their defense is extremely banged up, but they are competing. With Higgins out of the lineup, Tyler Boyd is a flex play this week.

Romeo Doubs, WR, Green Bay Packers (44%)

Why is Romeo Doubs owned in under 50% of leagues? Is it because Christian Watson is back now? Because I am a believer that both of these guys can coexist and be viable fantasy options for our fantasy teams for the rest of this season.

Doubs has seen 25 targets in the last two games, one of which Christain Watson played which was last week. Plus, he has finished as a top-13 WR in three of his four games. What are we doing here?

This week the Packers have a matchup against the Raiders who are tied for the lead league in touchdowns to wide receiver this season with six. If Doubs is on your waiver wire, he needs to be picked up, and pending your options started this week against the Raiders.

Michael Wilson, WR, Arizona Cardinals (1.7%)

Michael Wilson was a pleasant surprise against the 49ers last Sunday. He caught all seven of his targets for 76 yards and two touchdowns showing great body control at times. The rookie has shown that he can play and it looks as if he is gaining the confidence of his quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

We should temper expectations a bit though with him having just nine targets total before this past week. He was also still third on the team in targets behind Marquise "Hollywood" Brown and veteran tight end Zach Ertz.

The Cardinals get the Bengals this week, and the Bengals are middle of the road against opposing wide receivers. I would only start him in an absolute pinch, however, he needs to be rostered in more than just 1.7% of leagues.

Jaleel McLaughlin, RB, Denver Broncos (1.8%)

Alright, this one is a deep cut but it is because of the position scarcity. The running back position is in disarray outside of Christian McCaffrey so you should take a look at Jaleel McLaughlin.

I mentioned at the top, that Javonte Williams went down with a hip injury and could miss some time. McLaughlin came in and was serviceable in a good match against the Bears. He came in and saw seven carries for 72 yards plus caught all three of his targets for 32 yards.

He looked fast, shifty and very solid. McLaughlin will be sharing the backfield with Samaje Perine but is still worth a look as they take on the Jets. The Jets have allowed the fifth-most receptions to the running back position thus far this season and that is the role I can see Mclaughlin grabbing that role.

Jake Ferguson, TE, Dallas Cowboys (38.6%)

Jake Ferguson was in my write-up a few weeks ago and some have listened as his rostership has gone up. However, it isn't up enough. Ferguson is the TE8 on the season and has finished as a top -13 guy in three straight weeks.

You love to see the volume that he is seeing from his quarterback Dak Prescott. Ferguson has seen seven targets in three of the four games and in back-to-back games. They have a matchup against the 49ers and teams have tried to attack the Niners with the tight end.

They have seen the third-most targets go to the tight end position in the league. However, it hasn't gone well for those teams as the 49ers have allowed just 17 on 35 targets and one touchdown. I am still picking up Ferguson and starting him this week because the Tight End position is awful.

C.J. Stroud, QB, Houston Texans (38.9%)

Alright, it is now time to take C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans offense seriously.  Stroud has finished as a top-12 guy in back-to-back weeks and is QB10 on the season. In the past three weeks hasn't scored fewer than 20 fantasy points in any game.

Plus, volume is king and Stroud has at least 30 passing attempts in each game without throwing an interception. It really does look like the Texans have found their Franchise quarterback. He is also doing this behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.

The next two weeks are not the best matchups for him against the Falcons and Saints and then he has his bye week the following week. I know this might be looking to far ahead but in Weeks 15 and 17 during the fantasy playoffs Stroud gets the Tennessee Titans who have allowed the eighth most passing yards this season and are known to be able to get smashed through the air.

Pick Stroud up this week, at least for a stash.

Best of the Rest
