2023 Fantasy Football Week 6 Preview

2023 Fantasy Football Week 6 Preview

You have to be struck by the curious situation with the Patriots. Bill Belichick has not coached such a bad football team since before the Brady era. Is his job in New England over?

It seems quite obvious that his finest period with the Patriots was reliant on Tom Brady. Especially, since Brady tacked on an extra Super Bowl with the Buccaneers right after leaving the Pats.

The Patriots play the Raiders this week in a pivotal matchup for Bill Belichick. If the Patriots lose, we can firmly put Belichick on the hot seat. It's a soft hot seat because the organization will not ignore six Super Bowls in nine appearances.

Rather than get pushed out, the Patriots will try gentle persuasion first for his retirement from the team. Whether he retires from football altogether is another matter. Let's see how matters unfold, starting with this week.

Good luck in Week 6!

2023 Fantasy Football Week 5 Preview Blurbview

A brief rundown of the games this weekend. Time to set those lineups and watch 'em play.

Early Sunday: Forty-Niners (5-0) at Browns (2-2)

Embed from Getty Images

Although the main artery of the Forty-Niners is Christian McCaffrey, much talk these days has drifted toward Brock Purdy.

Purdy has been nothing short of excellent as a fantasy quarterback. His last three fantasy finishes have been QB13, QB11, and QB7 last week against the Cowboys. He has zero interceptions this season with nine passing touchdowns.

For a guy originally assigned as a backup on the team, he's taken hold of the starting job and won't let it go anytime soon. Granted, his supporting cast helps a lot, but Purdy passes the eye test as well. Making some very accurate passes, which are better than established quarterbacks in the NFL.

Browns Less Certain

Deshaun Watson might not be ready to play after the bye as his shoulder injury lingers. Watch this spot for updates. This leaves Dorian Thomson-Robinson as the backup. DTR had three interceptions against the Ravens before the bye and did not look anything like the UCLA star we saw in preseason.

Experience always helps, but DTR would now face a very dangerous Forty-Niner defense. If Watson can't start, the kid from UCLA will need big support from everyone around him. Without Nick Chubb, the Browns lack the teeth for a solid running game. Much of DTR's help must come from pass-protection.

Note: PJ Walker is likely to start at quarterback and not Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The same viewpoint above applies.

Forty-Niners Cruise?

Whatever quarterback starts for the Browns, the Forty-Niners are so dominating on both sides of the ball that it will take a great effort for the Browns to defeat them. The Browns need to avoid third and long. Not easy.

Look for the Forty-Niners to strike early. The Browns might look like The Clowns by halftime.

Fun Fact: The Browns have hosted the Forty-Niners only three times since 1993, winning each time. The Browns have also won the ATS and every game has gone Under.

Vegas Line: Forty-Niners -9.5
Vegas OU: 36.0
Start: Deebo Samuel, WR, Forty-Niners
Sit: PJ Walker, QB, Browns
Sleeper: Elijah Moore, WR, Browns
Pick Poll: Forty-Niners 97%
In the Booth: Kevin Burkhardt, Greg Olsen
Injury Update: Deshaun Watson O | David Njoku Q |

Ravens (3-2) vs Titans (2-3) (London 930 AM ET)

The Ravens and Titans come to London coming off losses. This has all the ingredients for a long day of slow offense and punts. Both teams will try to set up a ground attack, which is their nature. The Ravens have the better of it because of the mobility of Lamar Jackson. Thus, the passing game will open much better for the Ravens. Look for the Ravens to put heavy pressure up front on Ryan Tannehill with high potential for sacks and sack fumbles.
Vegas Line: Ravens -4.0
Vegas OU: 42.0
Start: Zay Flowers, WR, Ravens
Sit: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Titans
Sleeper: Rashod Bateman, WR, Ravens
Pick Poll: Ravens 86%
In the Booth: Rich Eisen, Kurt Warner
Injury Update: Keaton Mitchell A |

Vikings (1-4) at Bears (1-4)

The massive loss of Justin Jefferson to the Vikings, and fantasy, elevates Jordan Addison and K.J. Osborn. Neither have nearly the same skill as Jefferson, but extra targets have value. This puts the Bears in a good position to win this game at home. The Bears remain a team with a poor defense. They'll compete well enough on offense, despite their own depletions in the backfield. Look for a surprisingly vivid offensive game with potentially heavy fantasy points.
Vegas Line: Vikings -3.0
Vegas OU:  44.0
Start: Kirk Cousins, QB, Vikings
Sit: Cam Akers, RB, Vikings
Sleeper: Darnell Mooney, WR, Bears
Pick Poll: Vikings 64%
In the Booth: Brandon Gaudin, Robert Smith
Injury Update: Jordan Addison Q | Roschon Johnson O | Cole Kmet Q | Equanimeous St. Brown O | Khalil Herbert O

Seahawks (3-1) at Bengals (2-3)

The Seahawks find a way to win. The Bengals find a way to lose. Although the Bengals broke out last week, it was against the Cardinals. The Bengals will try and prove that last week was a turning point. It would be better to think the Bengals will scale back somewhat. With proper defense, the Seahawks fall apart and Geno Smith doesn't scare anyone. Nonetheless, there should be some explosive moments in this game. Comfortably start your fantasy studs on both sides.
Vegas Line: Bengals -2.5
Vegas OU:  45.0
Start: Tyler Boyd, WR, Bengals
Sit: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Seahawks
Sleeper: Zach Charbonnet, RB, Seahawks
Pick Poll: Bengals 67%
In the Booth: Ian Eagle, Charles Davis

Panthers (0-5) at Dolphins (4-1)

When you compare the weapons on the Dolphins to the Panthers, you can tell where this game is going. The Panthers do have a good defense, but one that cannot possibly match the Dolphins' power for 60 minutes. Bryce Young will certainly need the short game and Miles Sanders to somehow take some clock away from Tua Tagovailoa and his gang. It's not enough to keep Tyreek Hill quiet. Is there such a thing as a gentle blowout?
Vegas Line: Dolphins -13.5
Vegas OU:  47.5
Start: Bryce Young, QB, Panthers
Sit: Jaylen Waddle, WR, Dolphins
Sleeper: Salvon Ahmed, RB, Dolphins
Pick Poll: Dolphins 99%
In the Booth: Kevin Harlan, Trent Green
Injury Update: Miles Sanders O | Jeff Wilson Jr. O | Alec Ingold Q |

Commanders (2-3) at Falcons (3-2)

Congrats to Desmond Ridder for keeping his job very much alive. The first four weeks of 2023 were putting question marks on his abilities and Taylor Heineke looked certain to take over. When the going gets tough, the tough get going, as they say. It helps everything fantasy-wise when the quarterback shines. There's no reason Ridder can't keep it up this week. The Commanders' defense looked dreadful against the Bears.
Vegas Line: Falcons -2.5
Vegas OU: 42.5
Start: Desmond Ridder, QB, Falcons
Sit: Brian Robinson Jr., RB, Commanders
Sleeper: Mack Hollins, WR, Falcons
Pick Poll: Falcons 69%
In the Booth: Andrew Catalon, Tiki Barber, Matt Ryan
Injury Update: None

Colts (3-2) at Jaguars (3-2)

The Colts and Jaguars wrap up their divisional meetings this week. The Jaguars won in Week 1 by a score of 31-21. The difference now is that the Colts have Jonathan Taylor back, and Gardner Minshew starts. The Colts are better defensively. The Colts' key to preventing a sweep by the Jags is stopping Travis Etienne, who had over 100 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown last time. It's "bombs away" in this one. Take the over.
Vegas Line: Jaguars -4.0
Vegas OU: 44.5
Start: Gardner Minshew, QB, Colts
Sit: Zach Moss, RB, Colts
Sleeper: Jamal Agnew, WR, Jaguars
Pick Poll: Jaguars 86%
In the Booth: Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta
Injury Update: Zay Jones O |

Saints (3-2) at Texans (2-3)

The Texans still have a way to go as NFL contenders, but the fantasy apples remain ripe and plentiful. The Saints pushed over the Patriots in fine fashion last week. The Saints are near the top in fantasy defense, and C.J. Stroud will find that out. On offense, Alvin Kamara is getting hot. A frantic game is entirely possible. If Stroud can avoid the pressure and Derek Carr doesn't get too wild, the game could set off fantasy bells.
Vegas Line: Saints -1.5
Vegas OU:  42.5
Start: Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints
Sit: Chris Olave, WR, Saints
Sleeper: Taysom Hill, QB/TE, Saints
Pick Poll: Saints 71%
In the Booth: Chris Myers, Mark Schlereth
Injury Update: Tank Dell O | Adam Prentice Q |

Late Sunday: Patriots (1-4) at Raiders (2-3)

More than a football game. This is part of the history of the NFL. This game is a tipping point in a man's life. Bill Belichick.

If his team wins, the story continues. If his team loses, the curtain begins to fall. Bill Belichick is a successful NFL coach. He was lucky, having the greatest quarterback the league has ever seen. But Bill Belichick surrounded Tom Brady with the weapons and other ideal personnel.

For NFL coaches, success is fleeting. Much like in fantasy football, the championship makes for a nicer Christmas. Beyond that, the next year becomes important, and the next after that.

Bill Belichick wants to leave his job on a winning note. He wants to not give Robert Kraft the hardest decision of his life. A decision Jerry Jones made about Tom Landry. Some say it created the "Cowboy Curse" after Landry's death.

This is the story of this game. Following two of the greatest losses of Belichick's coaching career, what happens?

Added Spice

On the other side Belichick faces his former offensive coordinator and protégé, Josh McDaniels. McDaniels served under Belichick for 14 seasons as offensive coordinator. If this storyline needed extra spice, there you have it.

McDaniels has his own hot seat steadily warming up with the Raiders. Of course, as a Raiders head coach, the seat is hot from the time you take the job.

It's Mac Jones, Folks

Mac Jones remains the starter for the Patriots. There was some speculation that Bailey Zappe might come in, but Belichick is sticking with Jones. We still might see Zappe come in if Jones crumbles again.

Look for a game with tense action. Davante Adams is always a handful, but the Patriots will make sure no big gainers happen his way as best they can. The Patriots will rely on Rhamondre Stevenson to carry most of the weight on offense.

The Patriots won't take many deep shots, but they will expect Kendrick Bourne to play above his level. He can do that sometimes, but he'll need steady targeting.

Fun Fact: The Eagles have won the last four visits to the Rams, including beating the spreads.

Vegas Line: Raiders -3.0
Vegas OU: 41.5
Start: Kendrick Bourne, WR, Patriots
Sit: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Raiders
Sleeper: Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Patriots
Pick Poll: Raiders 87%
In the Booth: Jim Nantz, Tony Romo
Injury Update: Davante Adams Qep | JuJu Smith-Schuster O | Demario Douglas O |

Lions (4-1) at Buccaneers (3-1)

Before the bye week, Baker Mayfield looked as though he was hitting his stride. Baker looks like a quarterback the Patriots could only wish for. Strange times. The difference is that Baker has weapons with reliability. It is no accident that these teams have winning records. This game should be wide open for both sides, but the key is David Montgomery. The Lions hold a big advantage in the running game. Could be explosive and a fantasy bonanza.
Vegas Line: Lions -3.0
Vegas OU:  42.5
Start: Cade Otton, TE, Buccaneers
Sit: Rachaad White, RB, Buccaneers
Sleeper: Kalif Raymond, WR, Lions
Pick Poll: Lions 85%
In the Booth: Adam Amin, Daryl Johnston
Injury Update: Mike Evans A | Sam LaPorta Q | Jahmyr Gibbs O |

Eagles (5-0) at Jets (2-3)

Did Zach Wilson play better last week? Well, yes and no. The Jets beat the Broncos - great. Zach kept late drives going to keep possession - great. However, his 78.8 quarterback rating and low passing yardage with zero touchdowns passing would read like they lost. The 5-0 Eagles are in winning stride now and the Jets are really up against it. It is not likely that Jets will have a lead to run out the clock this time. Expect the opposite and worse.
Vegas Line: Eagles -7.0
Vegas OU: 41.0
Start: Dallas Goedart, TE, Eagles
Sit: Breece Hall, RB, Jets
Sleeper: DeVonta Smith, WR, Eagles
Pick Poll: Eagles 96%
In the Booth: Kevin Kugler, Mark Sanchez
Injury Update: Quez Watkins O |

Cardinals (1-4) at Rams (2-3)

We now know the new pecking order in wide receiver room of the Rams. Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are the 1 and 2.  Tutu Atwell scored a touchdown with an 89% snap count, so don't put him in your drop list for waiver prospects just yet. Get yourself used to a new name in the Cardinals backfield, Emari Demercado. With James Conner on IR, the rookie will get a good run in the next few weeks. Could be a rough one for the Cardinals.
Vegas Line: Rams -7.0
Vegas OU: 48.5
Start: Matthew Stafford, QB, Rams
Sit: Marquise Brown, WR, Cardinals
Sleeper: Emari Demercado, RB, Cardinals
Pick Poll: Rams 95%
In the Booth: Kenny Albert, Jonathan Vilma
Injury Update: Marquise Brown Q | Keaontay Ingram Q |

Feature Games

Sunday Night: Giants (1-4) at Bills (3-2)

Embed from Getty Images

What kind of storyline will they make out of this one? They'll figure out something interesting.

It used to be the "Honeymooner's Capital of the World" and especially for New York City residents. The famous song, "Shuffle Off To Buffalo" from "42nd Street" in the 1930s rode that sentiment.

Okay, I tried...

Josh Allen Riding High

Josh Allen finished as the fantasy QB2 last week, even though his team lost to the Jaguars in London. He has actually finished among the top 10 fantasy quarterbacks from Week 2. Against the Giants, expect that to continue.

With Allen, the offense has a ruggedly straighforward texture. It's not always perfect, but they get the job done in most cases. If they come against a team with a good running attack, that's when their system has trouble. Like last week versus Travis Etienne.

The Giants Need Saquon

The above describes why the Giants really need Saquon Barkley in this game. As of early Friday, his participation in this game remained unclear. If the Giants can control a better part of the possession time like the Jaguars (38min vs 22min) against the Bills, they might have a chance. Check this space for notes on Saquon's availability.
Note: Ian Rapoport on X: #Giants RB Saquon Barkley, out the past three weeks with a high-ankle sprain, is optimistic about being able to play today, per me and @MikeGarafolo. The team is giving him all the time he needs, and it's not 100%. But there is a real chance he returns today vs. the #Bills.

The Bills allow the fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks. Daniel Jones is out. It makes it even more essential that you don't use Tyrod Taylor as a bye-week fill. This includes super-flex and two-quarterback leagues.

Look for the Bills to fire everything up and go for deep shot after deep shot to Stefon Diggs and others. You may see James Cook even involved with medium-long strikes from Josh Allen.

Fun Fact: The Bills at home have lost four straight ATS versus the Giants since 1993. The Bills at home have also lost their last three straight up versus the Giants since 1999. All but once the games have gone under.

Vegas Line: Bills -14.5
Vegas OU: 44.5
Start: James Cook, RB, Bills
Sit: Tyrod Taylor, QB, Giants
Sleeper: Deonte Harty, WR, Bills
Pick Poll: Bills 99%
In the Booth: Mike Tirico, Chris Collinsworth
Injury Update: Daniel Jones O | Darren Waller Qep | Wan'Dale Robinson Q | Saquon Barkley Q | Dalton Kincaid Qc | Dawson Knox Q | Gary Brightwell Q |

Cowboys (3-2) at Chargers (2-2)

Troy Aikman will be delighted to have a dandy to call involving his old team. The Chargers, off a bye week, still have many questions to answer. First, why aren't they better? A question that fits the Cowboys as well. Look for some resolution of the problems for these teams and heavy offense. Start everyone fantasy relevant as some breakouts are imminent. Who they depends on game flow, but I suspect Dak Prescott is among them.
Vegas Line: Cowboys -2.5
Vegas OU: 50.5
Start: Dak Prescott, QB, Cowboys
Sit: Joshua Palmer, WR, Chargers
Sleeper: Brandin Cooks, WR, Cowboys
Pick Poll: Cowboys 52%
