2023 NBA Trade Deadline: OG Anunoby

by Michael Gorman

The 2023 NBA Trade Deadline rumor mill features some high-profile players like Kyrie Irving and OG Anunoby. Anunoby was the face of early-season Most Improved Fantasy Player narratives. This season, he’s averaged 16.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 0.8 blocks while shooting 45.6% from the field and 82.1% from the charity stripe.

While that amount of points and rebounds have become normal for Anunoby, the steals, and blocks represent a large upgrade. They’ve caused him to jump up to the top 30 in terms of 9-category per-game value.

Most fantasy players with OG Anunoby on their rosters might see trade rumors and cringe, but according to his advanced stats, he’ll be just fine wherever he goes.

In terms of USG%, Anunoby is right around his norm of 20. His True Shooting % is at 56.2 this season, above 54.9 in 2021-22, but below the 60% mark, which he hovered around between 2019 and 2021.

Anunoby’s STL% is 2.9, good for number four in the league, and his 2.1 BLK% is third among small forwards. Given that so much of his value comes from his defensive contribution, the biggest concern for Anunoby will be competing for playing time.

Keith will update his Fantasy Basketball Rest of Season Rankings after each trade as the NBA Trade Deadline expires at 3:00 PM on Thursday, February 9th.

2023 NBA Trade Deadline: OG Anunoby

The two most heavily-rumored destination teams for Anunoby are the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns. Each of these teams has room for OG in their starting lineup.

Depending on who they include in a trade for him, the Knicks would probably send Quentin Grimes to the bench and share shooting guard / small forward minutes between Anunoby and RJ Barrett. Evan Fournier and Cam Reddish would either be sent away in the deal or see diminished minutes.

Anunoby and Barrett primarily play small forward but have logged significant minutes at some point in their career at the shooting guard position.

The Suns wouldn’t be able to make it work quite as well. Mikal Bridges plays a super-majority of his minutes at small forward. Anunoby hasn’t played more than 35% of his minutes at power forward since his second season in the league. That season, he recorded the worst On-Off rating of his career, at -12.1.

Anunoby has been a reliable contributor for the Raptors for years. But it’s looking like the Raptors don’t want to keep his contract for the remaining two seasons after this one.

Despite all these swirling rumors, Anunoby is a skilled player on both ends of the floor. He should be able to provide fantasy value no matter where he plays.
