2023 PGA DFS: Farmers Insurance Open DraftKings Preview

The PGA Tour continues its West Coast swing in San Diego for the 2023 PGA DFS: Farmers Insurance Open DraftKings Preview.

Jon Rahm won his fourth event in as many months Sunday at the AMEX Championship. He headlines a strong field for the Famers Insurance Open. This event takes place on the North and South Courses at Torrey Pines. Our field includes five of the top ten players in the world teeing it up.

The PGA Tour made the wise decision again to have the event Wednesday thru Saturday to avoid the NFL's Conference Championship games. Be sure to set your lineups Tuesday evening!

The Farmers is the second consecutive tour event to take place on multiple courses. All will play a round on both the South and North courses Wednesday and Thursday but only play the South Course for the final two rounds after the cut.

The Venues

Torrey Pines (South Course)

The South Course is annually one of the longest and more difficult courses on Tour, topping out at 7800 yards. You will not see the birdie fest we've seen the last three weeks on Tour. For players to find success at this event they will need distance off the tee, accuracy on shots into the greens, and skill around/on them.

Torrey Pines (North Course)

The North Course hosts only one round in this event but always plays a huge role in determining the eventual winner. It plays almost 3 full strokes easier than the South Course. Players need to take advantage of their round on the easier North Course.

For example, three of the last five winners of this event shot 8 under or better on their round at the North Course. If a player doesn't shoot 68 or better on the North Course, they've effectively eliminated themselves from winning this tournament.

Weather

This year the San Diego area has experienced heavy rainfall leading into the tournament. Here's a quote from Torrey Pines Director of Agronomy:

"We have seen years with precipitation totals much higher than what we are seeing, but the frequency and consistency that these storms have hit have given the properly little time to dry down. With a few rain events still projected between now and the tournament, I'm expecting the course to play longer and thicker than it already does. Should be fun."

Factor accordingly.

My 2023 PGA DFS: Farmers Insurance Open Preview: DraftKings Lineup

Will Zalatoris ($9,600)

Zalatoris should have no issues with this course playing tougher than normal. He has six top-10 finishes in majors in the last two years as well as consecutive top-seven finishes at this event, including a solo second last year. Over his last ten events, he's gained over two strokes off the tee and on approach on the field.

On the season he's averaging 102 points on DraftKings and is 5th in DK scoring over his last 50 rounds. Zalatoris has now gained strokes in putting for four straight events. That is why I think a win is coming soon for Big Z.

Another option in this price range: Jon Rahm $11,600

Max Homa ($9,100)

Max Homa was born and played collegiate golf in California. He feels very comfortable on the yearly PGA West Coast swing. Homa has seven Top 10 finishes in the state of California over the past three seasons.

Those finishes include a 9th place finish at this event in 2020. Homa is Top 25 in the field across the board in the Strokes Gained categories. That includes a Top 10 in SG: Total, Tee to Green, Short Game, and Putting. He is also 6th in DraftKings scoring over the last 50 rounds.

Jason Day ($8,800)

Jason Day has an amazing track record at this event with five Top 5 finishes in his last 9 appearances at this event, including two wins and a solo third last year.

Day has gained 7 or more total strokes gained on the field in four of his last six events. On DraftKings, he's scored 88 points or more in four of his last six as well, and last week made an impressive 23 birdies to only 3 bogeys. Day is currently top ten in Strokes Gained Approach and Total Driving for the 2022-23 season.

Another option in this price range: JJ Spaun $8,500

Ryan Palmer ($7,500)

Palmer has not finished worse than 21st in his last 5 appearances in this event. Despite his age, Palmer still has plenty of pop off the tee averaging 305 yards in driving distance and he finished 27th last year in SG: Off The Tee.

In his only event of 2023, Palmer finished T32 at the Sony Open. He's second in total strokes gained at this event since 2018 with (+44.63), only trailing Jon Rahm in the field in that statistic, but $3,100 cheaper to add to your DraftKings lineup.

Gary Woodland (7,400)

Woodland is not exactly in great form coming into the Famers but does have a good track record at this event. He's made the cut at the Farmers in seven of his last eight appearances here, with four Top 20 finishes.

He's in the Top 26 in the field for strokes gained tee to green, off the tee, and strokes gained approach. The conditions being wet and the course playing longer should play into Woodland's strengths.

Another option in this price range: Patrick Rodgers $7,300

Ben Griffin ($7,200)

Ben Griffin continues to be one of the better values on DraftKings. He's 7th in the field in DK scoring over his last 50 rounds but he's only the 41st most expensive player for this week's event. He's made the cut in eight straight, including last week where he rebounded from an opening 73 and finished 32nd. Griffin has shot 67 or better in ten of his last fourteen rounds. In part due to a red-hot putter, he's averaging 4 strokes gained putting on the field per event in 2023. Griffin has never teed it up at Torrey Pines but the fact he's top 25 in the field in strokes gained tee to green, ball striking and approach shouldn't make that a major concern.

Another option in this price range: Lanto Griffin $7,000
