2024 Fantasy Baseball Week 13 Stock Up/Stock Down

The 2024 Fantasy Baseball Week 13 Stock Up/Stock Down discusses five players. These players' fantasy baseball value is trending up or down. Some are waiver wire pickups, some are worth dropping, and others are excellent buy-low and sell-high candidates.

A future Hall of Famer is back pitching in Major League Baseball. This veteran pitched his season debut on Sunday, June 23, and looked as good as ever. Following him is a superstar shortstop who started the year off terribly. However, after 75 games, we finally say he has turned his performance around. The last player whose fantasy baseball stock is up is a Baltimore Oriole.

Next up are the players whose fantasy baseball stock is down. A slugging superstar makes the list despite his impressive late performance. Lastly, a top-100 prospect got handed an 80-game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

The MLB At Rickwood game occurred last week when the St. Louis Cardinals faced off against the San Francisco Giants at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Rickwood Field is the oldest professional baseball stadium in the United States of America. The game and the broadcast did an excellent job of honoring the legends of the negro leagues that played at this ballpark in the past, including Willie Mays, who passed away just two days before the game.

Stock Up

Max Scherzer, SP, Texas Rangers

Mad Max Scherzer is back in Major League Baseball and looking like his usual self. In his first start of 2024, Scherzer tossed five innings on Sunday, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters.

The right-hander is in his 17th season. He has accumulated 3367 strikeouts in 2834.2 innings, a 214-108 record, and a 3.15 ERA. Scherzer has posted a sub-3.00 ERA in three of his last five seasons and eight of his 16 total seasons.

Scherzer is all but guaranteed a spot in the MLB Hall of Fame, but he still has some gas left in the tank. At 39 years old, Scherzer is still a high-end pitcher in fantasy baseball, and this start signifies that.

According to FantasyPros, Scherzer's next start will be on Friday in Baltimore against the Orioles.

Cedric Mullins, OF, Baltimore Orioles

Cedric Mullins started the year terribly and was in a timeshare for playing time. However, he has been tearing up the box score lately, so he is playing every day again. He's made an appearance in every game since June 7. He is slashing .308/.345/.500 in this span with a 140 wRC+. He has six multi-hit games and has belted three doubles, two triples, and one home run. The best part is Mullins has just three strikeouts in this span.

Despite this incredible stretch, Mullins still has a poor triple slash (.208/.253/.357) and wRC+ (73). His 16 stolen bases, however, are a team-best, and he is tied with Shohei Ohtani for the ninth most in MLB.

Mullins was dropped in most leagues, but his stolen bases did provide some value. However, we can no longer ignore this stretch of baseball that Mullins is on.

Francisco Lindor, SS, New York Mets

It wasn't that long ago when Francisco Lindor was a buy-low candidate. Now, he is back and has reclaimed his spot as one of the best shortstops in baseball.

First 30 games (3/29-5/1)
Next 15 games (5/2-5/18)
Last 30 games (5/19-6/22)137.315.372.53252215159

Since May 19, Lindor ranks 12th in runs, 15th in batting average, 22nd in on-base percentage, 30th in slugging percentage, and 21st in wRC+. Lindor ranks in the top 10 or higher in each category in his position. RBI is the only category where he ranks outside the top 10, but he comes close at 12th.

It's taken 75 games, but Lindor is finally turning the page. His stock is back to where fantasy managers are used to.

Stock Down

Byron Buxton, OF, Minnesota Twins

Star outfielder Byron Buxton currently has a 37% roster percentage in fantasy baseball. This low roster percentage is partly due to his injury history but mainly his down season.

It's tough to say whether he is trending up or down because his statistics over the last 14 days have been good. He is slashing .282/.333/.436 with a 121 wRC+ in this span. This doesn't include his stats from Sunday's game, where he hit a home run and double.

It's mighty impressive, but are Fantasy managers rushing to claim Buxton from the fantasy baseball waiver wire? Not yet. It's not enough for me to say his stock is up. Many fantasy baseball managers are still questioning whether he is worth an add. For me, his stock won't be on the rise until adding him becomes a no-brainer.

Orelvis Martinez, 2B, Toronto Blue Jays

Major League Baseball suspended Orelvis Martinez after he tested positive for PEDs. Martinez is MLB.com's No.68 prospect and the No.2 prospect in the Blue Jays organization. The exciting prospect made his MLB debut on Friday, June 21, and recorded a base hit and a strikeout in three plate appearances.

Martinez played 63 games at the Triple-A level, recording a .230/.343/.525 slash line. He belted 16 home runs and scored 46 runs and 46 RBI.

His above-average hit and power tools were supposed to help fantasy baseball managers this season. However, after the suspension, Martinez won't be eligible to return until September 23. This suspension takes him out of fantasy baseball consideration for the rest of this season.
