2024 PGA DFS: The Masters DraftKings Preview

Jim Nantz is known for first calling The Masters event "a tradition unlike any other." This event truly is like no other. It's held at the same time and venue every year. The Masters has become one of the biggest events in sports. And it is my personal favorite. Without further ado, let's dive into my 2024 PGA DFS The Masters DraftKings and Betting Preview.

Keys to Success at Augusta National

Experience Matters:

More than any event in golf you need experience to excel at this venue. Fuzzy Zoeller is the last Masters champion to win the event in his first tournament appearance. His win was in 1979.  A look over the last decade alone tells us that only four golfers have finished top-10 in their first trip down Magnolia Road.

Mid and Long Iron Play:

Players will face distances of 150 yards or further on 75% of their approach shots. Augusta National is one of the longer courses played annually on the PGA Tour. The powers that be at Augusta continue to make it longer. They've lengthened three of the par-5s and the par-4 11th hole since 2020, putting even further emphasis on a player's ability to excel with their mid and long irons.

Par-5 Scoring:

Tiger Woods from 1997 thru 2011 played in fifteen Masters Tournaments with four victories and seven additional top-5 finishes. He was 125 under at Augusta National on par-5s in that span. Last year we saw a two-person race between Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka for the green jacket. Rahm was first in strokes gained on par-5s for the week and Koepka was second. The previous year by the conclusion of the 2022 Masters Scottie Scheffler, Cam Smith, Rory McIlroy, and Shane Lowry were the top four names on the leaderboard. All four were also top-four for the week in strokes gained on par-5s for the week.

Driving the Golf Ball Long and Straight:

Thanks to advancements in golf ball and equipment technology. Players capable of moving their tee shots left to right no longer have a significant advantage at Augusta National. Instead, players with a high ball flight and elite carry distance have the biggest advantage. Jon Rahm won this event hitting his patent cut off the tee last year.

Masters Winner Trends

  • 10 of 11 winners had a top-30 finish in one of their previous two starts before this event
  • 7 of 10 winners won a prior event the calendar year of their Masters win
  • Only Tiger Woods(06/07), Nick Faldo(89/90), and Jack Nicklaus(65/66) won consecutive Masters titles.(Not a great sign for defending champion Jon Rahm)
  • Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 was the last winner of this event in their first appearance(Not a great sign for Ludvig Aberg/Wyndham Clark/Akshay Bhatia)
  • 14 of 34 winners had a previous victory at Augusta National(Most recently 2019 Tiger Woods and 2014 Bubba Watson)
