2024 PGA DFS U.S. Open DraftKings and Betting Preview

2024 PGA DFS U.S. Open DraftKings and Betting Preview

Donald Ross's masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2 hosts its fourth U.S. Open this week on the heels of Scottie Scheffler winning his fifth event in his last eight starts. Can Scheffler continue his dominant stretch at Pinehurst this week? Let's dive into golf's third major in my 2024 PGA DFS U.S. Open DraftKings and Betting Preview.

Pinehurst #2 is best known for being the venue of the iconic Sunday showdown between Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart in the 1999 U.S. Open. Stewart would hole a putt to win on the 72nd hole his second major championship. Tragically Payne Stewart would die months later in a plane crash.

The iconic Pinehurst #2 venue has been an ideal venue for the United States Golf Championship. Payne Stewart and Michael Campbell won the '99 and '05 editions of this event at Pinehurst at -1 and E par. Martin Kaymer won the 2014 event at -9 under par by eight shots. Kaymer is the only player in the three U.S. Open's held at Pinehurst to eclipse the score of -1 for the week.

Several of the best golfers in the world enter this year's event in great form. Scheffler enters as the first PGA Tour player in four decades with five wins by the first week of June. Xander Schauffele finally cleared that major hurdle by winning last month's PGA Championship and is hungry to win another. Bryson Dechambeau has finished top-5 in both majors played thus far this year as he aims to win his second U.S. Open championship. This event is shaping up to be a treat for golfing fans at one of the most fun venues in golf.

Venue (Pinehurst #2)

Compared to traditional U.S. Open venues, Pinehurst #2 is in class onto itself. There is zero rough on the entire property. Instead, fairways are surrounded by sandy waste areas full of wire grass and other local vegetation. The fairways at #2 are wide and lined with enormous Palm Trees.

Pinehurst is famously known for its turtle-shelled-shaped greens. Johnny Miller, when describing the greens, famously said "like trying to hit a golf ball on a Volkswagen Bug/Beetle." These small targets on the greens will lead to shots rolling off the greens and into tightly mowed areas or the waste areas mentioned above.

Players can expect extremely firm and fast conditions. Tiger Woods said in his press conference the greens could reach 13 on the stimpmeter this week. Golfers will rely on great distance control, precision, and patience to excel this week. This is particularly true on approach shots into the greens.

I am targeting players who are accurate off the tee and have elite mid/long iron game. The players I targeted this week who are not elite ball strikers need creativity and hands of a surgeon around the greens. Pinehurst #2 is the rare course where it gets more difficult the closer you get to the hole.

Measuring 7,543 yards, the par 70 course is a beast in every sense of the term. Featuring only two par 5s, Pinehurst ranks as the fifth-longest course on the PGA Tour since 2015. In 2014 the average round played three shots over par making it the fourth toughest on Tour in that time period. Only Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot, and Oakmont have played tougher in that time span.
