6 DFS 2018 British Open Deep Sleepers

on

I’ll admit right off the bat, that I have a lot more confidence picking some 2018 British Open deep sleepers than I do the studs to target. This is an extremely deep field with 78 of the top 80 golfers in the world teeing it up at Carnoustie this week.

Which of course underscores how important sleepers can be this week. Carnoustie, often nicknamed “Car-nastie” has been absolutely vicious to even the best golfers in the world. I’m not really looking for sleepers this week who can win it all. I’ll take those that make the cut and avoid scores close to double par, thank you.

Most of the fantasy games out there reward players who make three eagles and three double bogeys slightly more than those that shoot a bogey-free, even par round. But sleepers that can achieve the latter this week will be golden.

But that doesn’t mean go for the gold in your large pool GPPs. You might like the top picks more than me, so I’ll give you a $6500 option. But the bottom really falls out at that level. There is absolutely no need to dip below that this week. Even if you grab the two most expensive players (DJ and Rory) this week, you still have plenty of options in the $6500 to $7000 range. Of the rosters I have created so far, for example, I have yet to go lower than $6800.

But I want my 2018 British Open deep sleepers to remain deep sleepers. So we will look at golfers listed under $7k on DraftKings and for your convenience, hit each rung on the ladder like we usually do.  Also for your convenience, I have listed the Yahoo! price for your convenience. If in doubt, go with a European this week, but few of the European’s have cheap salaries, so let’s start South of the Border.

Abraham Ancer – $6500 DK, $20 Y!

Having secured a British Open berth just two weeks earlier, Ancer withdrew from the John Deere Classic last week. He opted to come to Carnoustie rested and ready.

Ancer is having his best year yet, highlighted by a T-4 earlier this month at the Quicken Loans National. Ancer currently finds himself inside the top 100 of the FedEx Cup. Despite some success, most of Ancer’s stats don’t instill a lot of confidence. But I said “most”.

He’s 30th overall in scrambling, which will come in handy this week on the brutal course that is Carnoustie.

Austin Cook – $6600 DK, $21 Y!

Carnoustie bites even the most seasoned PGA players let alone those making their first British Open appearance. However, fortune favors the bold and there are none I like more at this price point than Cook.

“Cookie” has already won this year and unlike many others this week, he will likely be playing very loose with little pressure on him. He had his third top ten two weeks ago at the Greenbriar and then shot four rounds under 70 last week at the John Deere Classic.

Currently 24th in the FedEx Cup Ranking, his current form alone is enough to make him worth the gamble at this price point.

George Coetzee – $6700 DK, $20 Y!

Coetzee is a very sneaky pick who makes for a great contrarian play.

Most DFS players on this side of the pond are far less familiar with those who make their hay on the European Tour. But like Cook, Coetzee has already won this year and comes in with decent form having secured a Top-25 finish his last tournament.

However, unlike Cook, Coetzee has a few British Opens under his belt already, including two Top-25 finishes. Don’t get too confident as he has missed the British Open cut a few times as well, but as I said, he makes for a great sneaky pick. But if you prefer to run with the masses, consider the next option.

Emilliano Grillo – $6800 DK, $26 Y!

Maybe I am missing something because both Yahoo and DraftKings have him priced really low. But he’s missed all of one cut this year and has six top tens. And Grillo is not doing it with smoke (Smoke. Grillo. Ha-ha. Get it?) and mirrors.

He is 28th in birdie or better. He is 8th in shots gained total with Top 25 rankings in shots gained off the tee; shots gained putting, and shots gained tee to green. Think that might come in handy this week? At this price, I’m absolutely willing to bet it will.

Beau Hossler – $6900 DK, $23 Y!

I loved Hossler during the Texas swing. Yet all he has done since the tour left Texas is finish T-2 and T-6 at the Travelers and Quicken Loans National respectively. Furthermore, players are reporting that the greens are currently very hard and fast at Carnoustie.

Putting could be very key this week; Hossler is 10th on tour in putting. Hossler might be sneakier than Coetzee and with much higher upside.

Kyle Stanley – $6900 DK, $31 Y!

Stanley burned a lot of gamers with last’s week dismal performance. This will likely lead to his lowest ownership rates of the year this week. But here’s a fun fact: After Stanley’s last three missed cuts, he’s bounced back the following week with a Top 25 performance.

Currently ranked 38th in OWGR, Stanley has a couple of made Open cuts under his belt already. Expect a third. Stanley is currently 8th on tour in GIR and 4th in driving accuracy. Those two skills will come in handy this week, making him one of my preferred 2018 British Open Deep Sleepers.
