Dynasty Baseball Double-A Update (5-22)

by Mike Schneider
Dynasty Baseball Double-A Update

It is 5-22 and that means it is time for the monthly edition of the Dynasty Baseball Double-A update. We will look at the goings on at the AA level over the last 30 days.

There are typically three big waves of minor league promotions. Around this time of year prospects who have excelled for the first part of the season are promoted. This week a list of prospects that have been promoted include Deyvison De Los Santos (ARI AAA), Blade Tidwell (NYM AAA), Chandler Champlain (KC AAA), Jacob Gonzalez (CHW AA), Luis De León (BAL High A), Andrew Morris (MIN AA), Matt Wilkinson (CLE High A), and Chandler Simpson( TB AA).  Next week will also likely be a busy week of minor league promotions.

The second wave of prospect promotions will be after the league All-Star games.  The prospects get to take part in the All-Star festivities and then move on to the challenge at the next level. Lastly, many prospects will get promoted at the very end of the year just to give them an idea of the play at the level they are likely to begin next year.

AA Park Environments

A few weeks ago I looked at the park environments for the AAA stadiums and now I doing the same for the AA stadiums.

Below is a summary of the runs scored and home runs hit in each AAA park over the last three years.

In AAA the Pacific Coast League is a more favorable environment than the International League, However, the three AA leagues are more neutral. Over the last three years the runs per game in the Eastern League is 9.36 compared to  9.76 in the Southern League and 10.5 in the Texas League,  Home runs per game are two per game in the Eastern League versus 2.14 in the Southern League and 2.24 in the Texas League.

In the Eastern League, Bowie (Orioles) has the highest run per game (10.5) and homers per game (2.55).  Harrisburg has the lowest runs per game (8.32) and Akron(1.58) and Harrisburg (1.60) have had the lowest homers per game.

In the Southern League, Mississippi (Braves) stands out as the best pitching environment. Interestingly Chattanooga (Reds) has the highest run total (10.95) but is under the league average for homers per game.

Amarillo (Diamondbacks) is well known as an extreme hitters park. With Reno being the Diamondback AAA team, it is difficult to evaluate Arizona's prospects since both upper minor teams play in very hitter-friendly environments. I was surprised to see how much San Antonio (Padres) is a pitcher's park. Last year San Antonio only hit 35 homers in 69 home games.

Agustin Ramirez walked more than he struck out over the last month.  He has been one of the most impressive players at AA so far this year.

In the last 30 days, Cooper Bowman is a perfect 15 for 15 on the bases with 12 extra-base hits.  He was a fourth-round pick by the Yankees in 2021 and was part of the Frankie Montas deal at the 2022 trade deadline.
