Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week: Dylan Cease

by Nick Zaniboni
2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week

Welcome back to another Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week! This week we will be covering White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease. Last week we looked at Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France,

But, before we get started, don’t forget to check out Dave’s Dynasty Baseball Rankings and the On Deck Circle Podcast!

Cease comes in at number 79 in Dave’s rankings; Surely, I see him becoming a top-50 Dynasty asset in the coming months.

It has been a busy week to be a Boston sports fan; each night this week, there has been a playoff game for the Celtics or Bruins. I even was in attendance at game two of the Celtics vs. Bucks series! I continue to be a part of the most spoiled fan base in all of sports!

Breakout 2021

Cease was always a trendy name in dynasty circles to have a breakout. Well, in 2021, Cease did, in fact, breakout! He compiled 13 wins with a sub-four ERA and over 200 strikeouts. Ten of his starts were registered as quality starts, and he had a career-low in WHIP with 1.25. This was a big enough breakout to get some more trendy Cy-Young takes from the fantasy baseball community.

Cease has been unbelievable this season; he is making many people look very smart in buying the hype this offseason. Could we be looking at a possible fantasy Ace? Let’s look at where he ranks throughout the league before we crown him!

Baseball Savant

Well, according to the percentile rankings, Cease is essentially a top 5% pitcher in the MLB. This is a great start for the 27-year-old hurler. Cease is relying heavily on his fastball and his slider while mixing in his change and curve. Below is the breakdown of the percentages of each pitch:

  • Fastball – 41.6%
  • Slider – 37%
  • Curve – 17%
  • Change – 4.4%

Cease is coming off of his best start on May 2nd. He took on the angles and what I saw was something that could be built on. He ended with 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K 93 pitches – 64 strikes. That is a beautiful stat line and one that I am buying the hype on.

I am looking forward to seeing what Cease does the rest of this season. What I love about his situation is he is not the Ace of the White Sox; in reality, he might be the third “best” starter on the White Sox. With players like Giolito and Lynn in front of him, in some leagues, he might be flying under the radar.

Verdict

I see Cease as a high-end dynasty SP2. However, he has the ceiling of an SP1. I would maybe wait to kick the tires on Cease and wait for a blowup start because it happens to the best of them. If you own Cease, hold onto him unless you are nowhere near to competing!

Have a good week!

P.S. – The stache is sick.
