Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week: Nestor Cortes

2022 Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week: Mid-Year Review

Welcome back to another edition of Dynasty Baseball Player of the Week here at F6P! This week we will be covering Yankees Pitcher Nestor Cortes; last week, we looked at White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease.

But, before we get started, don’t forget to check out Dave’s Dynasty Baseball Rankings and the On Deck Circle Podcast

Cortes is coming in at 378 in Dave’s rankings; he should be due for a decent rise, maybe within the top 300.

I hope everyone has some nice plans as the weather turns to spring/summer! I will be traveling over the pond to London in a couple of weeks, and I am turning 29 in two weeks! So there are some fun weekends ahead!

First and foremost, we need to get this out of the way. Nestor is one of the most likable players in baseball; reasons for that are he's an underdog, he plays for the Yankees, and that stache.

By The Numbers

Nestor has started six games thus far in the 2022 season. In six games, he has a record of one and one. However, wins are not a huge factor in fantasy baseball in most worlds. So let's look at more fantasy-relevant stats. Currently, Cortes has an ERA of 1.41 a WHIP of .97 (wow), and has fanned 42, good for a 34% K-rate . As we dig deeper into the numbers, you can only get more excited for this Nestor. As we look at the more advanced numbers, we are indeed seeing red. He is in the top 90 percentile in the following categories xwOBA, xERA, xBA, and xSLG. I am not a huge advanced stats guy; I am more a meat and potatoes regular counting stats guy. However, I realize their importance and see how they can be beneficial in evaluating a player.

My Concerns

I have two concerns when it comes to Nestor. Concern number one is his fastball tops out at 90 MPH. That is not near as fast as I would like in a pitcher I am relying on. However, it is working; opponents have a .206 average against the not-so-fastball with an xBA of .163. So I guess the not-so-fastball is fooling hitters, but I worry that as summer comes, hitters will feast on it.

My other concern is with his most-used pitch: the cutter. He's thrown it 211 times so far this season, good for 40.7% of the time. It has been his most useful pitch this year; however, if we look at last season, hitters hit .271 against it, while this year, hitters are batting .137. So I think the most realistic prediction is somewhere between the two.

Nestor is a great story, he is someone that is easy to root for. However, he is not the guy we are seeing now. I suggest you move him ASAP while the hype is happening. I think he should go back to his more normal form of a dynasty SP5 or a streaming option! And, for the record, I am proud for not Yankee-shaming at all throughout this article. (Yankees suck.)

Have a great week!
