This is the Dynasty Baseball Prospect Rankings. The prospect rankings will be updated during the season on the 15th and 30th of every month. This first release is for the 2023 preseason.
For those who are curious, I have all my 2022 prospect rankings in a Google Sheet.
Purpose and Ranking Philosophy
These prospect rankings are for dynasty purposes for 5 x 5 leagues. The rankings for dynasty baseball differ from real-world rankings.
Pitching prospects are much less stable than hitting prospects so as a result, it is more difficult for a pitching prospect to get to the top of the rankings.
Stolen base potential impacts dynasty prospect rankings more than real-life prospect rankings since it is perhaps the most scarce of the 5 x 5 categories.
Defense is only important in terms of future eligibility at a more scarce position and potential playing time opportunities.
In a 5 x5 league on base potential versus just batting average is not of direct importance but it can impact potential playing time opportunities and help in the run and stolen base categories.
Compared to most prospect rankings, I am more skeptical of the hype of prospects at the lower levels. However, I have a tendency not to move prospects down the prospect rankings who are young and are struggling at a new level initially.
Organization Summary
Below is the breakdown of prospect rankings by organization.
A few items that stand out.
- Despite not having a top twenty overall pick since 2013, The Dodgers excel at scouting and player development.
- The Reds and Cubs have improved their farm system significantly in the last few years.
- The Braves have gotten great production from their system in recent years but the cupboard appears to be bare.
- A few years ago the Padres clearly has the best farm system in baseball. With the exception of Fernando Tatis Jr, they mostly traded away those prospects to acquire MLB talent. There is not much talent left.
