Dynasty Baseball Under the Radar Prospects 8-24-23

Regular season baseball is finally back. With MLB and Triple-A action underway, it's time to look at this week's dynasty baseball under the radar prospects 4-6-23.

Corbin Carroll and Anthony Volpe are already showing off their speed. Grayson Rodriguez delivered a solid first outing with the Orioles. And while these guys and some of the other high-ranked prospects are being closely watched, dynasty owners need to be scouring the free agent pool to get a jump on some up-and-coming names.

Below is a rundown of five dynasty baseball prospects who are all available in over 50% of leagues on Fantrax. Four of these players have less than 30% ownership right now.

Dylan Dodd, SP, Atlanta Braves

The Braves gave Dodd his first MLB start on Tuesday, and he did not disappoint. He went 5 IP with 6 H, 1 ER, 3 Ks and 0 BB.

Dodd generated 12 whiffs and finished the day with a 32% CSW. He displayed his plus command with a 71% strike rate (along with no walks).

The stuff is not overpowering, though, so don't break the bank on him. He should be more a priority for dynasty teams that are competitive now. He's on a good team with a good defense, so you can hope for some wins and decent ratios if he continues to get starts.

Addison Barger, 3B/SS, Toronto Blue Jays

Barger is off to a solid start at Triple-A. He has two multi-hit games through three starts with the Buffalo Bisons. He showed off his power with this 108.1 MPH home run on April 1.

I covered Barger's dynasty potential in March, highlighting the impressive numbers he posted in 2022. Barger's biggest concern - aside from his strikeout numbers - is where he slots in with the Blue Jays. But he's on the 40-man roster. Whit Merrifield and Santiago Espinal are already struggling at the plate, and one injury could also open the door for a call-up.

Matt McLain, SS, Cincinnati Reds

What should we make of this guy? Selected No. 17 overall by the Reds in 2021, McLain has endured a steep drop in dynasty rankings. He's not even in the top 200 on some prospect lists, but others are reconsidering their placement after a promising spring.

McLain is already off to a hot start at Triple-A with 1 HR, 4 RBIs, 1 SB and a 1.299 OPS through four games. He crushed a 421-foot homer on the first day of Triple-A play at 103.5 MPH.

The power became his calling card last season, and that could be even more impactful at the Great American Ball Park. His Fantrax ownership is down to 22% at the moment.

Maikel Garcia, SS, Kansas City Royals

Baseball America listed Garcia as the Royals No. 28 prospect in 2022. This year he sits at No. 6 for the organization. That jump comes after he hit .285 with 11 HRs, 61 RBIs and 39 SBs in 118 games last season.

With a 1 HR, 9 RBIs and 2 SBs through the first four games at Triple-A this season, he looks like he could take another step toward fantasy relevance this season. He hit .318 in a brief 22 ABs with the Royals last season, and he hit .324 in 14 spring training games last month. Garcia is on the Royals 40-man roster, so he could be back up soon.

Chase Silseth, SP, Los Angeles Angels

Silseth cruised through his first Triple-A start last week. The right-hander went 5 IP with 2 H, 0 ER, 6 Ks and 0 BB.

He posted excellent numbers at Double-A last season with a 2.28 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. He also pitched at least 6 IP in 10 of his 15 minor league starts. Just don't look at his major league stats from 2022. Definitely don't look at the 6.59 ERA in seven starts.

Silseth is one to watch as he continues his development in the upper minors this year. He has mid-rotation potential if all goes well.
