Dynasty Football Debate: Demario Douglas

Dynasty Football Debate Demario Douglas

Before we get into Dynasty Football Debate: Demario Douglas, I have to say...this season is going by way too fast. Week 8 already!? It feels like we just started, and now we are almost halfway through the 2023 NFL Season. Crazy.

NFL Week 8 is off to a pretty decent start for fantasy football. Josh Allen did his thing, Chris Godwin is still a PPR machine, Mike Evans came through in the clutch for many nervous onlookers, and Gabe Davis scored 23.7 PPR points on everyone's bench. Cannot wait to see what the rest of this week brings.

Typically we talk about players that are probably already rostered in most dynasty fantasy football leagues, but this week we are switching it up a little bit. Demario Douglas is only rostered in 62% of leagues on Sleeper right now, and I think it's a perfect opportunity to scoop up a player with a good bit of upside if you have the flexibility to do so.

Let's find out why. This is the Dynasty Football Debate: Demario Douglas.

Before the start of the season, Bill Belichick had some glowing praise for Douglas. Belichick noted, "He's a smart kid. He picks things up well, learns quickly, so all things that work in his favor." For those who have followed Belichick's career, they know that when he compliments a rookie on his intelligence before the season even begins, it carries significant weight.

Patriot's History of Developing Receivers

The Patriots have a well-deserved reputation for taking wide receivers with modest draft capital and turning them into star players. When you think of late-round gems, names like Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Wes Welker immediately come to mind. These players were instrumental in the Patriots' success during their time in New England.

Listen, I know Tom Brady was a major factor in the success these players had in New England. I would never dispute that, but the thing that matters most right now is opportunity. Belichick was willing to give those guys a shot, and now it seems he is willing to give the same shot to Douglas.

Explosive After the Catch

One of the most exciting aspects of Demario Douglas's game is his ability to be explosive after the catch. Douglas's elusiveness and agility make him a threat to break off big gains on short passes.

He can be a threat to score whenever he touches the ball in space. He may only be 5'8", but the days of saying guys are too small to play and make an impact are over. Speed and quickness are the name of the game in today's NFL, and Douglas has those traits in spades.

The Mac Jones Connection

Mac Jones has been less than stellar for most of this season, but he also just has not seemed to be very confident in his pass catchers. If someone can step up and be that guy to develop a solid connection with Jones, I think it is likely we see better quarterback play for the remainder of the 2023 NFL Season at the very least.

Kendrick Bourne has shown flashes as well, but with Douglas seeing more and more snaps, I think it is likely a connection could develop there.

The 2024 NFL Draft

Looking ahead, the 2024 NFL Draft promises to bring in a fresh crop of promising quarterback prospects. While Jones has shown potential, the Patriots could have their eye on a new young gunslinger in the upcoming draft. If this happens, it could open up even more opportunities for Douglas and the Patriots' receiving corps.

The addition of a highly-touted rookie quarterback could inject new life into the Patriots' passing game, and Douglas would be a player to watch in such a scenario. For dynasty owners who take the long view, this potential development makes Douglas an even more intriguing stash.

Conclusion

While he may not be a household name just yet, his explosive after-the-catch ability, the Patriots' history of developing late-round wide receivers, the potential influx of quarterback talent in the 2024 NFL Draft, and the trust of Bill Belichick make him an intriguing prospect.

It's true that not every stash player turns into a fantasy football star. Douglas could very well turn out to be a dud, but in deeper leagues, I think he is worthy of a stash.

Opportunity is everything. If he continues to see over 60% of snaps moving forward, that means more targets, more receptions, and more fantasy points. Go pick him up if you have the flexibility to do so.
